If youre looking for a more conservative and slower paced "southern lifestyle" check out the panhandle. If you have money, South Walton county cant be beat. Southern Santa Rosa county in the towns of Gulf Breeze and Navarre are pretty nice and have the best schools in the state. Traffic can be bad at times during the summer due the fact there is only one artery along the coast with no north/south detours because of the bays and Eglin AFB.
The above places I mentioned are within minutes from the beaches. If you dont mind driving thirty to forty five minutes to the beaches the small towns in northern Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties are nice as well and pretty damn cheap. I will say this though, being just three minutes from the beach is NICE. Today for breakfast I stopped at "MacDonalds" like we say in the south, and parked my car by the beach and watched the waves roll in as I ate. Paradise it is.
Another BEAUTIFUL area is Pt St Joe and Apalachicola. Crystal River area is also really nice but it doesnt have the beautiful beaches like the Emerald Coast but jobs in these areas are even tougher to find. While I am talking about jobs, unless you are in the medical field its going to be HARD to find a job and jobs pay crap down here. When you are in a place that people are willing to take less pay just to live here....well you know.
We do have winter on the Emerald coast. But its not bad, I still havnt put away the shorts and flip flops and I went spear fishing yesterday, with a wet suit though.
If you want summer year round check out Stuart County, warm pretty much year round but doesnt have the "problems" the rest of south Florida does....yet.
Dont worry about the bugs/frogs/snakes and now in my case, bears. You get use to them. Fire ants are a PITA but I grew up with them and know how to bring them hell when need be. Amdro will be your friend. If you live near water you will often find mummified frogs in your house. And if laying in bed one night you hear what sounds like one of those miniature R/C helicopters they have out now buzzing around, dont panic or turn on the light, just go back to sleep and remind yourself that the giant flying cockroach that just buzzed your head is a small price to pay to live in a place most wish they could.
