Thinking about getting fiance a present for christmas

Hey all,
I'm new to this forum and kind of a newbie all around at this but here goes nothing.
I am thinking about getting my fiance a freshwater stingray (after an aquarium and everything else has been bought) for Christmas, I need to get started now though. He is very experienced with freshwater, unlike me so I trust he will be able to take care of this, and trust me, he will be the one handling the setup and acclimation and all that! But as for me, I would like some ideas as to what kind of setup I need and what a good ray for a first time would be? Also money is an important factor, I'm not looking for crappy and cheap but I will be looking for a good deal

Craigslist will be your best friend when it comes to purchasing a tank. As far as size, I would start with something like a 120 gallon which is 4x2x2 and that will be important with any kind of Ray.

Okay so a 120 gallon, and what kind of gravel and filtration would you suggest?

You definitely want sand substrate. You will need about 2 50 pound bags and you should use pool filter sand which you can get at home depot for about $10/ bag. I would see if i can find a used FX5 canister filter and you can buy an AC110 aquaclear filter online for about $70 and your set.

A partial sand bottom is good or a complete sand bottom. An fx5 is what a lot of keepers use for filtration, along with a drip system. It may be wiser to go with a larger tank though so that you won't have to upgrade so soon. I would say start with a 300 or bigger. My motto is do it right the first time so that it doesn't cost so much money in the end.

A 120 will not support a ray for life you will need at least a 240 gallon. Best starter rays would be a Motoro.

You could keep hystrix not to hard to keep and could be kept in 2' wide tank for life. Usually best deal is aqua scape in November last year 75 dollars for a 4" pup
