Thinking about getting into pikes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How much is are they asking?? Are they from the rio trombetas? I actually picked up a 15 inch xingu 1 pike yesterday. He's so big I don't know if filament barbs or evolans will be ok with him. He tried to chew off a 6-7+inch geophagus tail as Soon as he got acclimated. Eventually Lents and marms can get that big. Good luck with whatever you chose to do.

I think the pair is $300 but need to double check. I am not sure on collection point. Will try to find out

$300 pickup? Good deal only $150 apiece. I got my big xingu 1 guy for $100 since the guy drove 2 hours in bad weather felt sorry so I gave him more and the fish was really nice haha. Little skittish now and is alone in a 80 gallon with a 7 inch motoro. I know it's overcrowded but my 300 needs to get plumbed. He doesn't bother Rays but goes ham on free swimming fish. I'll start a thread on him. Hopefully find him a mate too... They've been bred before same with marmorata and atabapo 1 (friend spawned em said it was easy. Wes has em real cheap they can be vented at 6 inches fyi I might get some).

I will double check the price tomorrow. I could be wrong. The nice thing is they have been together a while and are not killing each other.
Interesting is that typical they are ray safe? I saw the ones Wes has. they are really tempting. Are all adult pikes sexually dimorphic or do some have to be vented?

I would be wary of an established pair, and moving them into a new tank. That is usually when they break any bond they have had, and go psycho because of the new territories. If you're going to get them, I would also suggest several dithers and a large predatory species in the tank to help reaffirm the bond.

Give them lots of room to run, and lots of places to hide. Like the PVC mentioned previously, it will work better if objects (fake plants) are used to help break line of site.

Snookn21 has marms for $150 a pair, at 4" each.

This would allow you to raise them and see the bond form.

Either way, good luck. Large pike can be a tricky ordeal.

They're probably a bonded pair. Lots of soft acidic water and lots of goldfish and high quality food to condition them and a bit of tweaking and luck and you can spawn them.

As for being Ray safe idk about most of them. Xingu 1 are open water pikes needs current and space to feel comfortable. Doesn't mess with bottom dwellers whatsoever I think. previous owner had it with a 5 inch catfish think it was a rtc. He fears the Rays for some reason. He could easily kill them no doubt idk why lol. Some people have kept marms with Rays I believe unstoppablejayd had marmorata with some. It's all a hit or miss. Some people had zebrina almost kill expensive Rays. Others had gigantic Rays cloak and wound small pike. My pike is 15 inches measured and Rays 7-8 disc radius. Sweet looking combo. Probably getting raiamas Guttatus as dithers for him. Hopefully they'll be as mean and nasty as I read so they can hang with him.

Almost all pikes are sexually dimorphic. For lugubris species females exhibit a white bad running down the dorsal and often the upper caudal fin. Also usually have a red pink orange belly. Small ones have to be vented but suprisingly they can be vented at this size. They grow fairly fast debating whether or not get a group of like 4 of these guys or some Uruguayan pikes... Or raiamas guttatus.... Or all of them and make my parents super mad lol... at least I could prob take the Uruguayan pikes to college since they don't get as big as most lugubris pikes.

I checked on the pair. They are actually $350 which isn't bad. Just curious where you finding raiamas guttatus?

I had some tanks while I was in school. They are nice to have but don't get carried away. Between the long brakes and likely hood of frequent moving they can be a bit of a pain.

Importer in California finally tracked em down, and he had his agent get some for me. Pm me for his contact info if you actually want some.
$350 isnt a bad price. Ask him for pics. Personally I find the black marbled marms to be much better looking than the greenish ones but some people will disagree it's all opinion. either color I wouldn't mind.
In regard to tanks in college I was thinking of a 20-40 gallon breeder with a battery powered sponge filter and a AC 110 I could have a lone medium sized pike cichlid and 4 giant danios. I'm hoping to go somewhere local too so I don't have to worry about parents killing my fish but idk I've decided to sell my Rays someone's picking them up this week dont trust my parents lol. Gonna get some expensive hardy fish like maybe some of the rarer hoplias and crenicichla pairs raiamas and a few others. If The pikes spawn I can also grow some fry out when I go to college and if some die I wouldn't be upset. Does that sound like a good plan?

If you don't mind my friend is going to pm you about them. He has been trying to get some for a while now. Though your inbox is full. Let me know when we can try to send you a message again.

Your plan definitely sounds good for college. The only thing I guess I would caution you on is choosing your school based on your fish. The hobby will always be around (maybe not all the same fish) but you are only doing college once and you might as well do whats best for you and your education. I did my four year undergrad 4 hours from home. I maintained some fish at school and my parents killed most of my stuff I left behind. I then did four years of grad school and kept some more tanks but nothing special. I am 5 years out and have more tanks and fish then ever. Just do what makes the best sense for your education and financially. There will be more fish. Though you have some really good schools in your state. Good luck

My marm attacked everything except the rays never even took one look at them but almost killed a bonded pair of festae before i sold her!!! Charney you should pay george for that pair and see if he will hold them... wont see a deal like that again.

Sorry I overlooked your post. Thanks for the info. That is not a bad idea to get several juvies and grow them out. You suggested a large predatory species if I go with a pair. What do you normally use that is not too aggressive but can hold it own?
