Thinking of a doing a Fahaka setup.

Most puffers can somewhat camouflage themselves a little based on their surroundings... so if the surroundings are darker, they tend to have a darker color to blend in... But also considering your puffer has only been in there a day, he could still be settling into the tank, so give him a few days and see how he does...

BTW, if you guy was wild caught, you may want to also go through a round of dosing anti parasite meds, since a lot of them do tend to come in with some form of IP's when brought in from the wild...

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep an eye on its stomach a day after feeding to see how long his stomach stays full. I'd hate to medicate him without first diagnosing.

That is one hell of an impressive decor you have in your tank dude! Real jungle river feel to it, and lots of hiding places and still plenty of free swimming space... Fine work. The puffer will love it, but it may limit some of your tank mate choices given the dense plant cover at the surface. Makes me think Bichirs, odo pike or maybe parachanna maybe the way to go with tank mates... Keep it an African affair maybe.

5 star generals, and frempongi would look good. My general never get ripped fins, they are very fast. Rapps usually have them.
Odoe is a good shout too, Bircher might be a risk as they are slow, possibly some small fast cats with hiding spots everywhere?

I just put in four Kribs and added some flat lace rock pieces to the bottom of the aquarium to create nooks and crannies for the Kribs to hide in. Also ordered six of Jeff Rapps's Hemichromis sp. 'Bangui'.

Just fed them some fiddler crabs and threw in thirty ghost shrimp and watched him to go town.

Funny you say Odoe as I was thinking about adding one. Do you have yours with an Odoe?

I wish I can find parachanna. They are illegal in the states right? This is the second Odoe reference. I may have to do it!

Regrettably I went another route with my fahaka tank... So no Odeo. I had 3-4 totally different stocking lists/decor set ups in mind and one was the African river like yours. But I really love South/Central American cichlids so I have a bit of a cultural mishmash in my tank. Yeah sorry I forgot all Channa are illegal in the US.. Your tank sounds like it will be beautiful with those small colourful African cichlids... So maybe stay away from the Odeo as he will eat them all lol!

After much deliberation my Fahaka is in a 220g with an Oscar, Atabapo red pike cichlid, 2 syno Decorus, Frontosa cichlid and a golden cobra snakehead (I know! But I need to try it as they are 2nd Gen tank bred).

Keep us update as i love fahaka comm tanks
