What are your thoughts on a trade between my 5 1/2 inch black diamond rhom for a 7 inch piraya is this a fair trade? How rare are piraya and could I house just one piraya and one 8 inch caribe together until I find some more pygos of their size?

if you LOVE your black diamond then its probably not a fair trade, but money wise it is, depends on the condition of both fish of course. got pix of both fish?

you can keep it with the caribe but there's the chance that the piraya may get attacked by the caribe since you only have two pygos in the tank and the caribe is already used to the tank.
what size tank are you going to keep them in?

I got a pic of my fish He's kind of shy I just moved him from a 29 to 55 gal tank. I bought him late summer he was around 3.5 inch so far he grew about 2 inches. He's kind of a boring fish to watch never really moves unless he's eating. That is why I was thinking of trading him in for the piraya and maybe getting a small shoal of maybe 4 fish in a 75 gal.

in that case then do a trade then, a shoal is much more fun.
however, if 75g is the biggest you can go then a piraya is pretty much out of the question as they can get HUGE, so the 18" width of the 75g is not so good.

I'd keep the Rhom unless you are able to upgrade pretty soon from the 75g esp if you are putting a Piraya let alone more pygos, jmo..............

You're in portland? You trading with private sellers or a LFS? If a LFS, which?

Well I decided I will keep my rhom hopefully he will be more active when he gets a lil bigger. I added some wood for him to hide hopefully this will make him feel safer and less shy later. My original plan was to grow him to about 8 to 10 inches and do a planted 125 aquarium with lots of different tetra species.

How much longer do you guys think it will take him to grow another 4 inches? He's in 55 gal with a ac 110 filter and a powerhead with sponge attached. I do about a 25% water change every 2 weeks. He eats but he don't eat like a pig like I see some do on youtube.

it'll probably take 2-4 years for a 5-6" rhom to get to about 10" and I would up the water change every week instead for every two weeks. what temperature you have the water set to? not all rhom eats like pig but I believe the more comfortable it gets in the tank the better it'll behave so keep it up.

2 years don't sound to bad but 4 yrs is a long time... Guess I just gotta be patient since it was a birthday gift and not just another fish.

I will do more frequent water changes from now on. The temp is currently at 82 degrees should I crank it up or lower it?

if the temperature is already at 82F you can leave it (or can even lower it to 80F if you want)
just keep up with the water change and feeding (remove uneaten food) and it should help with the growth. a bigger tank would also help but a 55g is fine for now.
