you can start now, depends on the size of the ss and the appetite of your rhom.
I've had rhom that likes to swallow whole smelt in one gulp and also rhom that likes to eat whole smelt one bite at a time.

What kind of smelt do you use? Over here at the asian grocery store they have frozen fingersize smelt from Canada. I tried these before for peacock bass but they wouldn't touch them.

those are the ones I use, they are sold in 1lb bags with head and everything. I also tried big ones (without head) and work just fine.
perhaps the peacock bass wasn't use to it?? when introduce new food to your rhom sometimes it won't take it right away, just starve it for few days then try again and repeat if necessary and eventually it'll start eating as it won't starve itself to death.
