Been a fish keeper for about 6-7 years now. Started with a 5 gallon GloFish tank and within a year, ended up with multiple tanks. Current set up is 3 tanks (well 2 really) 125G, 60G community tank (with 2 of those glofish still alive!!!) and a 28G Hex with 6 African Shelldwellers and 2 catfish. The 125G had about 30 African Cichlids that I just gave away on GCCA.net, a local chicagoland Cichlid site.

We're moving in a few weeks and I have been wanting to change my stocking anyways, so I used this upcoming move as a good reason to change things up. So I have a nice large empty 125G tank and nothing to go in it. I've got a FX6 and a Fluval 306 for filtration on the tank.

Ideas that I initially had: Oscar, Flowerhorn, silver arrowana and/or a giant pleco (I saw a Green Phantom Pleco at a fish show years ago that I thought was really cool and it was HUGE)

I've been a casual lurker of this site for years. I came here last week and saw this FS thread and he's really close to me (I'm about 15-20 miles away) and it got me thinking that maybe I can get 1 stingray pup. I've been watching Joey's videos on YouTube for years, before he built his gallery and his pups look so cool.

I'm thinking something that has a 8-10 (or longer) year lifespan and doesn't require me to feed fresh (or frozen) food (shrimp, tilapea, tuna, etc) other than on rare occasions. Something that survive on pellets/flakes is preferred.

I'm not in a rush to get this tank back up and running.

Appreciate any suggestions.

A silver Arowana and stingrays will get too big for a 125 unless your going to upgrade. Oscars could be nice, you could have a pair. Many options for a 125, what would you want, predatory, solo, community?Ever thought of bichirs? These guys are cool prehistoric fish, you could have many species in there. A single red devil would make a fun glass banger wet pet. A community of a couple mid size cichlids and large schools of tetras and 5 pictus catfish could make a fun interactive tank.

I would say some cichlid there are a lot of choice and there are colorful

Yeah, I've been down the Cichlid route, though I had Mbuna, which are the smaller Cichlids. An all male peacock tank would be cool. I've also seen some cool Texas Cichlids.

Or you could do a bass or brim

My inlaws would tirelessly mock if I got a bass. "Can I fish him" "When are we gonna catch him and cook him up", that sort of thing. They're big fishermen type and go fishing in Canada every year and catch walleye.

What's a Brim? I'll have to research it.

Keep the suggestions coming! I've got time to do research and get this tank moved and ready for a stocking!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking initially about the Arrowana or Stingray. I don't plan on upgrading, but then again, I didn't plan on upgrading from the 5G. LOL
Oh and I just remember that at 2 separate times years before the 5G I had .5 or 1G tanks with betta.

I don't particually like the look of the Bichirs, at least not on Joey's videos.

Red Devil? Another one I'll have to add to the research list!

The initial thought was to move all my community fish into the 125 and just get more of them! Still a viable option!

If you like Oscar a you could maybe try an Oscar and a larger pleco and just keep the two fish. Providing the Oscar allows it, if they grow up together it might not be a problem.
