Thinking of getting a monster fish for my 125G . . suggestions?

If you like Oscar a you could maybe try an Oscar and a larger pleco and just keep the two fish. Providing the Oscar allows it, if they grow up together it might not be a problem.

Definitely an option and probably the "easiest" option as far as maintenance and familiarity for me.

So surfing Craigslist here in Chicagoland, there's an ad right now for 2 Red Parrot Cichlids and a Jack Dempsey. I like both those fish, so something like that (After we move) would be an option too.

Yeah, I've been down the Cichlid route, though I had Mbuna, which are the smaller Cichlids. An all male peacock tank would be cool. I've also seen some cool Texas Cichlids.

My inlaws would tirelessly mock if I got a bass. "Can I fish him" "When are we gonna catch him and cook him up", that sort of thing. They're big fishermen type and go fishing in Canada every year and catch walleye.

What's a Brim? I'll have to research it.

Keep the suggestions coming! I've got time to do research and get this tank moved and ready for a stocking!
All male peacock tanks are cool, you could also do some of the larger haps. There’s no such thing as going down the cichlid road though since there’s so many types and they’re so different from each other in every way. If you want something different that is predatory, get a few pickerels.

I don't really care if it's a "predatory" tank per say, but you're right, there are TONS of cichlids out there, and I've only relay had the 2 types, the Mbuna previously in this tank and the shell dwellers that I have now.

That would be a great setup for a nice solo Oscar or a Midas or a jaguar. I am currently doing solo setup for each of those 3 in my 125s. Though I do have a pleco in with the Midas i guess, but they don’t even notice each other.

Oscar and Midas are the most “owner interactive” solo fish imo.

Are you looking for a single wet pet type fish? Puffers make cool wet pets. You could also get a glass banger cichlid. You could do very cool oddball aquarium in a 125. Maybe some smaller bichirs, rope fish, an African leaf fish, and/or brown knife a smaller type of shovelnose like elongatus

You could do a community. I love watching my 135 community tank. The main fish are 3 ctenopoma (African leaf fish), an ebjd and1 Rotkeil severum. Then I've got a school of dennison barbs, various cories, couple raphael cats, couple bumblebee cats and bn plecos. It's a pretty harmonious tank with lots of interest and activity. My leaf fish are pretty outgoing and they've got these big puppy dog eyes when they beg for food lol.

I’m into the severum or Geophagus right now.
Mix in some electric blue Acara for a splash of color and that green phantom you mentioned.
With some nice driftwood roots and soft lighting makes a beautiful South American display.
