Thinking of replacing my asexual murder krib with?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well. So I got a little impulsive today, I was picking up some food and wouldn't you know their tanks were looking better than usual and they had some attractive healthy looking convicts. I got a pair, male likely weighs a hair more than the krib.
Murder krib is holding him to the far left side of the tank, and occasionally charging him even there. Murder krib is pissed, I'm not sure how this is going to go, maybe like I thought after some more time.

Try pulling the krib out and into another tank for a bit or put it in a breeder net. It would give time for the convicts to settle in. I’d also recommend rearranging the decor to confuse everyone.

Good call.
Oh man I suck. Murder krib bit me twice getting (it turns out her) seperated, because: she has fry, tons of them eatting on my sponge filter. I'm not where she hid the eggs, I've been looking in and under things a lot lately, but there we are.
Got the convicts in temp home.

That will do it…
They go from totally harmless to holy terrors when breeding. My pair claimed half of a 4 foot tank and took out a rainbow shark defending fry. Killing off the cichlid competition makes sense for these guys.
They are cave breeders so you will likely not see the eggs until the fry comes.

And about on time she's calming down and letting everyone else back down to the bottom of the tank for the last couple days. Fry are spreading out and mostly on their own, still got a couple dozen-ish.
Still during the bulk of the carnage pre-fry I was sure the murder krib was a dude, spade tail, no pink on the belly. For a couple weeks I was sure that he was the only krib left in the tank.
Still feels like something weird and magical happened.
Ah well, tank is pretty chill and ready for not much changing for at least a few months, possibly longer if female convict takes out most but not all of the fry now that she can get the rare chance.

Post pics. They are cave breeders, and spend a lot of time hiding. You likely have a male and a female in there.

Yeah, I need to get a camera at some point. My phone is an old potato which is fine as I make one phone call a day, and that's about it.
My spare heater went silly when I had the convicts separated in a rubbermaid and had to put them back early. A picture of the morning I found the male with his belly half open with fry in it would of made this thread.
It's possible I have not seen the male in a month, I obviously missed some other things. If so he's good, I watch that tank a lot, have re arranged caves and rocks, done some planting, twice weekly water changes. All this time the female has been both guarding territory and tending to the fry. The male has never came out to eat, which was not at all like him before hand.

Well better late than never, took some pictures this morning. Tank has been great lately, peaceful and healthy, Wish I could of gotten better pictures of the fry but they tend to spend the mornings split up and mostly hid.

Nice scape! Hard to tell from the angle the fish is in the pic, but that first one looks male based on the dorsal fin pattern.

Yeah right? It's been confusing. If the fish is a male single parent, would he look more fem during active brood care? Up until murder krib let the fry split up a couple weeks ago it had a flaming red belly, now barely even a blush.
