Famous323- every Cali fisherman I've talked to switches the names of those two fish...must be a regional thing.

you sure buddy i've been fishing these guys out here in ca since i was 5 and thats the common name here hahaha

I've also been fishing here all of my life and am from cali. Thats a green. Bluegill are more dish-shaped in their bodies and lack the blue spotting/lines on their face. Bluegill and greens are also able to cross breed in the wild to make hybrids. They look similar as juveniles and school together, but I can tell the difference right when i have them on my line.

Greens have more of a bass-like body and their mouths are HUGE. bluegills have baby mouths.

Crappies are totally different. different colors (white/black) and different fin shapes, and different body build. Completely different mouth too.

here is a bluegill for reference.

Bluegill and Sunfish are very similar in appearance (more so when juveniles) but not synonymous. That fish is a Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and not a Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus).
