sorry to hijack this thread. thxs autumneffect! i realized i have one more question: can they be trusted with small fish (danios and tetra) or would they make a habit of snacking on them?

If another fish can fit in their mouth, chances are it will get eaten eventually. I would not keep any small fish that resembles a minnow in with sunfish. Large species of minnows such as creek chubs, common shiners, and golden shiners are all acceptable tank mates/dither fish as long as they are too big to eat. Large Giant Danios would probably be fine. I have my 2.5" Bluegill in with some male Odessa Barbs and all it does is chase them around some time as the Barbs are much too large for him to even think about eating.

If you are going to catch some sunfish for your tank, I would recommend staying away from Bluegill. IME they are very, very aggressive to all fish, not just other sunfish. The 2.5" Bluegill I have is way more aggressive than my Greens (most of which are larger than it).

Interesting, my P-seeds are WAY more aggressive than my bluegills. In fact, I find my bluegill kind of boring. I have 3 and 2 of them hide all the time. The other is kind of small, and will swim around, but even he tries his best to stay away from the pumpkinseeds.

These fish are awesome, and so colorful when they spawn! I bought them from Zimmerman's Fish a few years ago and now they spawn like crazy. The males are around 5" but they go agro if a big koi comes close to their nest.

Wow beautiful fish, hate to say it but the pumpkin seed looks almost a bit like a discus
