Jason I don't think you especially are out of line as you are fighting for your countries freedoms. While on this topic I can only imagine how many WW1 and WW2 Canadian soldiers are screaming from their graves at the freedoms Canadians are losing and doing nothing about it. It is time we as fish owners and pet owners bond together to fight what is happening to our right to own a pet. Our group as a whole are being gentely and forcefully swayed away from what we enjoy.

Bill, your crusade is just that yours. What happened to you and yours is not the same as what you are discussing. I would gladly give up every tank I own to prevent another invasive species from destroying a bit more of our ecosystem. Using Riverfront is IMO a very poor example of animal rights activists gone wrong. edited to add: I also know the difference between a fish that died overnight, and one that has been laying dead for a few days. In all my years of frequenting fish stores in Calgary, I have only ever seen the latter in that store.

Boldtogether .... I'm not one to use the like system here, but I'm about to break tradition.

A few years back a group was attacking my families zoo and had an online petition to shut us down. It was brought to our attention thta the Alberta SPCA had a similar petition. So my wife phoned the ASPCA to inquire about said petition and was told by the head of the ASPCA that it was true. She then asked him if that was part of their mandate and was told yes it was. There were no charges against us nothing just SPCA backing the beliefs of an animal rights group. She then contacted Alberta Agriculture who grants the SPCA money to enforce the animal protection act. She asked if they were aware of this action by the ASPCA and if it was what they were supposed to do. The AG rep stated that as long as they enforce the act what ever else they do is ok by them. Not really what you want to hear from the agency that is supposed to be looking after your best intrests. The morrow is that the government has allowed this group into a position of power without truly doing their home work on this group. Same goes in Calgary they have given this power to the HS without a thorough look at what they believe. Calgary has had the STampede for 103 years or so now. The HS is fighting and sneaking in rules to have the rodeo part shut down. To add insult to injury the stamede board members are bending to appease the HS.
My point here is that the HS and SPCA may not be part of PETA but they are cut from the same cloth. This is enough to give me shivers as it should any store owner or pet owner. Many of the articles posted about the topic of this thread are written defending the actions of the HS as reported by them. Why is that considered the truth. Something not many people know is that if you buy or rescue an animal the moment you take possesion any distress that animal is in is your responsability. So if the HS walked into any LFS on the day new fish arrive and there are fish gasping and floating upside down or what ever guess who is causing this distress. Thats right it is the store owner is it his fault no but it is in the eyes of the HS or SPCA. Which would lead to the question do you dare try and rehab a sick or injured animal. Even with the knowledge of how to treat this creature you will need a vet paper saying that they havr seen it. This is an added cost that truly need not be there but you must have in order toprotect yourself. Could this not of happened to store owner in question?

Could - shoulda-woulda, but that isn't what happened.

The HS in question does not have any history of targeting pet stores in the Calgary area. Since they have been incorporated in 1922, other than this store, how many pet stores are you aware of that they have managed to get the city of Calgary to pull their license?

I guess what I should say then is that I fear what is happening to Piverfront will be used to advance the attack on to other stores. We can not deny that history has proven that one extree event leads to laws that affect others in a negative way.
A personal crusade is how a lot of things in history have happened some good some bad I am truly hopefull mine is for the good. Zoo Check Canada is a personal crusade of one Robert Laidlaw which inevitablely forced my family to cocede defeat. We could have continued our fight but for lack of the millions of dollars this man sucks out of people in the name of saving animals. PETA I believe is the personal crusade of Ingrid Newkirk and we know how they work. My intention is not for this to be a personal crusade but an eye opener to others before we lose our hobby.
The issue of the LFS in question will have its day in court and one side or the other will win. The way it stands now maybe a stalement will be the best outcome because I really enjoy the chance to go there and see his variety of fish.
Many times ivassive species are introduced by the government themselves to control a differnt species. Sometimes how ever yes they are introduced by unknowing pet owners. Then there are the illegal trafficers that are next to impossible to control. So even with a total ban of a species there will really be no way to control its introduction to an envirment. With our water ways connected so much in this continent we may already be invaded I hope not. These are things though that taxpayers dollars could be spent on better than nannies for our leader.
As I have ststed many times RD you are one guy I really don't want to argue with. You have way to much knowledge for my own good LOL.

And beyond the mandate of the animal rights groups, there are offenses under the Canadian Criminal Code. Such as the following offenses...

Kill, maim, wound, or injure an animal without lawful excuse.

Cause unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

Abandon an animal in distress or wilfully neglect or fail to provide suitable and adequate food, water, shelter and care for it.

And just like the HS, law enforcement agencies act on complaints.

And speaking of complaints, I suspect that a good portion of those complaints come from none other than fellow hobbyists. That's right, do you recall the store in RD that used to sell reptiles? Another former customer of mine. lol

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95958

Check that thread out, including this comment;

I get a least a call or 2 a day with complaints about the store. I even had calls from the SPCA the first week it was opened because of all the complaints they have gotten.

or this one .....

Go there. See for yourself. Take pictures. Report him to the ALBERTA SPCA (not local SPCA or Animal Society [catsndogs only]) and I am not stopping here, so you can join my facebook group called "Help Shut Down Red Deer Reptiles!" to post your stories to the general non (necessarily) reptile community that would be appreciated. Keep dropping in there and keep calling the AB SPCA with anything you find disturbing or suspicious. If it's illegal please contact the Red Deer RCMP immediately.

thank you for your time.

Those comments are from reptile owners, yep, fellow hobbyists turning on the very stores that supply the animals to them. Not tree huggers, but herp huggers. Imagine that. The thread above is 74 pages long, and spanned 5 years. Point is, the people pointing the finger may in fact be the person shopping next to you at your LFS. You just never know where it might be coming from, and maybe, just maybe, sometimes that's a good thing.

No worries Bill, it's all good. I attempted to return your call, now I have to head out again.

Have a good one.

California is known for its wackjobs....amongst other descriptives....
....just re-read the restricted species Oddball has listed in the sticky of the same name......
damn.....those wacky environmentalists have been busy.....
I had forgotten just how thorough a list it is...I'm surrprised you can even buy a fish to keep in California....but I digress and we do.

Gotta give California the nod for Wackjob Capital of the World....so I went to Oddballs' sticky Restricted Species to refresh my memory.....
I had forgotten just how thorough those wackjobs have been..busy, busy, busy....
I do believe in the regulations however, and I have owned many of the species listed.
Yet I continue to do nothing....and probably won't do anything because in my heart I am an Earth lover. I like living here. I want my kids to catch trout out of the same rivers and lakes I fished as a kid.
I want my kids to see the giant trees up north just like I did.
I want my kids to catch a wave and toe the nose just like I do.
So we get responsible.
No one is diminishing the misfortune of a man losing his business under the blanket of animal rights advocacy.....but who protects people from other people encroaching on their land or property in the name of progress....eminent domain has claimed hundreds of acres of my family's land in Colorado. I have several friends who have lost their homes to corporate land acquisitions.....
The point is, we should watch each others back....and back yards. Greed and complacency will distroy a society and their governments.
