Parents are more to be blamed here than the school. Were they supportive with his chosen lifestyle? Regardless if bullies are present the kid probably felt more abandoned by his love ones (if they were not supportive) than the bullies themselves. If you parent the child to be more confident and to not be afraid of who they are, regardless what people say it will not matter.
It's really tragic because it's a young child. Not his fault, nor it should be. His mind was not developed to handle such criticism by the outside world. Probably had no support @ home.
It's frustrating when you hear parents also say, "OH, my 12-13 yr old talks back to me and doesn't listen. Sometimes even hits me". Plain and simple they don't respect you.
Seriously, my role as a parent is to be a parent! Not to be their best friend and for them to treat & speak to me as if one. The food I put on the table is what they eat, I don't ask what they want to eat. Tough love goes a long way and builds character. Shoot, not once have my Dad ever said he loves me, however his actions speaks a thousand words. Even when he whipped me on the ass with his belt....lol
