Anyone who beats an animal to death for fun is NOT right, and yeah as a little kid i stepped on the occasional ant but would never kill a snake (and i cup bugs now and take them outside). But these aren't little kids, they are teens. (And major ***holes)

And FYI, Jeffrey Dahmer grew up torturing and killing animals.

What these kids did and what people like Dahmer did are completely different. These kids probably wandered upon the snake when they were bored one day, did what the video showed, and then left the snake on a trash pile somewhere. Dahmer actively hunted down animals, dissected and mutilated them, and unless I'm mistaken, kept and preserved some of the remains. These kids are nowhere near as twisted as that. And teens are kids, as much as we don't want to admit it. We're still developing and learning, and yes, we're still pretty stupid.

Same goes for the mentally handicapped depending on the disability you really want to go there? As far as experiencing love then no you are just mistaken, that's just wishful thinking.

I have a lot of personal experience with the mentally handicapped, and I will say that even in pretty severe cases the reasoning and motor skills they have is still much above that of any other animal, as is their ability to interact with other humans and partake in human emotions. If not, then their problem is much beyond what you'll usually see in mentally handicapped people. And their capacity to love is equal to that of any other human, if not more in some ways. I do believe that certain animals have somewhat of a capacity to love and enjoy the company of other animals/humans, but nowhere near the deep love that humans share for each other. That's more of a subjective topic though, there's no scientific way to prove if animals feel love because love is abstract. There's really no reason to argue opinions.

Very well said. Although I am shocked you defend what these "people" did to the Snake... and don't tell me it was boredom. The worst thing I ever did while bored was dig a hole in my wall (dumbass move:screwy:) If you torture animals out of boredom, something is seriously wrong, and you have something much more than boredom inside of you. You can't brush off this kind of behavior as "boredom".

I'm not angry with these kids.. It's all a matter of perspective really. It's easy to be upset and shake our fists at these kids, but in the grand scheme of things... they have really done little harm. Sure, their actions are horrific, and I certainly do not condone animal cruelty, but there are far worse crimes against wildlife. Crimes that are committed by our peers and so called "animal lovers".

I spend a great deal of time in the field, experiencing herps in their natural settings. I can't tell you how often I hear of, or seen animals being overcollected from certain locations, or witness habitat damage to microhabitats.

You can look at the pet trade. How many animals die year in and out to satisfy our need to keep them in our homes? There have been a few cases of herps being collected to point of near extinction from the wild! Who's buying those? These teenagers bashing the hell out of this snake? Nope, we are!

You can point a finger, but do realize there's 3 more pointed back at you.

I'm not defending it, believe me, I think it's wrong. And I'll be honest, I'm gonna guess that there was a little bit of booze/drugs mixed in with the boredom. I just don't think it's comparable to things that people like Dahmer or any other killers did. These kids aren't serial killers, just dumb teenagers.

HOLY **** I WOULD DROWN THAT GIRL IN THE RIVER. Poor little pups!!!

Well if it helps at all, it had a semi-happy ending. All but one of the puppies turned up a bit of a distance down river, shaked and wet but otherwise okay. But still, you gotta wonder what drives someone to do that.

(Don't breeders cull puppies by tying them to bricks and throwing them into swimming pools? F-ed up...)

I honestly don't know if the ending of the story even really ended up that way.. there was such an uproar about it, they could have just made an ending to put at least part of the issue to rest...

It is a shame that dogs are culled-- It's a shame that any animal is culled because of it's physical traits.. (Koi being a HUGE example of this)

Good point. I find it amusing no one chose to challenge that remark.
Hasn't this thread run it's course btw?
