My bad,I was a little confused by your post that I've quoted below,as for the goldfish,it would not bother me very much as they seem to be more tolerable than jurs.

for the record i aint useing my fish because i havent found a jurense catfish for sale localy. once i get my catfish i will stock it with the cichlids and bichirs.
I was thrown off by this^^.

Testing water with no fish swimming around in it? With no live bacteria? Alright.
You might as well have just tested the tap really.

So... am I to understand you originally kept your fish with no filter?
Then you plopped this lung into water that was not cycled?

hopefully the lung gets through this healthy

People don't like being told they are doing it wrong.

However, it's easy to access information on how to cycle a tank the right way.

Putting any fish through it, whether it's a 13 cent goldfish or a 100 dollar discus is wrong. Period.

Why would you not just use a piece of shrimp from your freezer, or some fish food? Why insist on using a fish, other than the pure sadistic pleasure?

I've always used fish,or some living animal up untill the last few years after I've learned of better, less cruel methods.

We all "have used fish" that's just how it was done "back in the day." Lots of things changed, and with new information, WE have also changed.

We have a lot more information available to us now, and there's no excuse for not doing the research and reading up on it first. If you don't, and someone explains it to you, and you still insist on putting a fish through it, then there is just something wrong with you.

Leave the OP alone, whether or not he uses fish to cycle isn't really anyone's business, he didn't post the thread asking for advice and I'm fairly certain he doesn't appreciate all the hate in this thread. Just gonna throw this out there, I've always used feeders to cycle tanks and then right after fed them to my fish. Is that cruel? I say no, some others say yes. Whether or not using fish to cycle is cruel or not is a matter of ethics, and ethics is nothing but opinion. In the long run, it gets the job done just as well.

To the OP, nice tank and the lungfish looks nice as well. Can't wait to see this project make even more progress.

To you it's wrong, but to others it may be just another process.

If I choose to cycle a tank with a goldfish, it's not because of any sadistic pleasure- maybe I don't have access to any other way of cycling a tank- or maybe I'm an older person who believes in using fish to cycle?

I am neither or the above, but I will be honest and say that when I first started, I used feeders to establish my first tank- I lost none, and now they are living life in someone's koi pond.

Each person has their own ways of doing things. Whether he knew it or not, it's not a "rule" in fish keeping that you can't use fish to cycle a tank.

We can preach to him all we want about the nitrogen cycle; but he's his own person and we simply can not make him do something he doesn't want to do.

That's enough. We've argued enough for a day already. Get yourselves a break and cool it.
