I was Christmas shopping today (the friday before Christmas) and I was walking along the front of a strip mall in the Seattle/tacoma area, when on my way to one store, I was walking past a chinese resteraunt. It caught my eye right away, a big big tank with many arowana's in it. I'd say about 10 in all. It was clearely over crowded but still an impressive sight. All were adult arowana's of various ages. When, after about 30 seconds or so I noticed it. In that tank with all the silvers was about a 14" Super Golden Arowana. I had never seen one before in person but have seen many pictures. There is absolutely NO doubt that this was a Super Gold. Maybe I'll go back with my camera and take some pictures. But I thought, why would someone put this fish right in the window of the store since its illegal? What would they (the department of naughty fish) do if they saw it there? What would the store manager do if I pointed out that his fish tank is crowded and offered him $200 for the gold fish? Thought provoking huh?

Hah, I have yet to see one but would love to. Imo I would try and offer him the money for the fish. As long as you dont go spamming around that u have one you will probably be fine.

Good luck mate!

I bet being with a whole group of silver arowanas helps.
Someone who doesn't know much about arowanas looks, sees a group of silver arowanas and all is fine?. Back before I knew better, I thought an arowana was an arowana and didn't know there were different kinds.

Do let us know if you manage to get this arowana :)

I am pretty sure that they are aware of what they have, it's worth a shot but I doubt they will sell it to you, maybe if the price is right? YOu never know till you try. I would be cool about it and would never think about busting anyone. An LFS had an asian Aro in the window tank and of course I tried to get it! THey said it was something else at first, then said they had "papers", for it. I hope you can score! Good Luck!

possibly a pre-ban Aro?...

 what i was tinkin, did it look really old??????

pre-ban at 14"?
If you were gunna offer him money, ask to buy a couple of arowana's. People wise up they've got something special even if they don't know it when you go - "see that arowana there thats different to the others, how much you want for it?"

the chinese consider aros good luck and are highly superstious (sp?) lots of luck getting them to part with it imo they probably would think it would be a bad omen for their resteraunt.

He would be insulted, since these fish are worth thousands of dollars and even more in an controlled country. He probably feels it will bring him very good luck, maybe enough luck not to get caught.

Very interesting!

Davo speaks the words of a wise man with experience!
Definably worth a try, offer to buy 3 arowanas from him for good money, see what he says…
