As far as the LFS pursuing legal actions to recover the loss. I would doubt that would happen it'll cost them more in time and money then what it's worth.
If it were me I would work with the store, you really do not need to pay full retail to cover their costs. They may even pay part also, it could be part their fault for the way the canopy was set up. Possibly even a safty hazard, but I do not know the exact sitsuation.
