Thorichthys pasionis: A Jewel of the Yucatanl

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They look great. Ive been wanting these guys for years but every time I get space I'm too impatient to track some down.
Yes, they don't seem to come along that often.

Yes, there are many beautiful Thorichthys species besides Meeki, but they are not commonly available. I tried T. elioti couple times, beautiful fish, but I found them not hardy vulnerable to bacterial infection.
I've had trouble with several Thorichthys species over the years ellioti (maculipinnis), 'Mixteco gold, aureum and helleri to name a few.
Yes that would be great. Do you know the exact locations in the Yucatan? Congrats on the spawn!

A main collection point in the Yucatan is Laguna Silvituc or as it is also known by, Laguna Noh. It is also found in the Carrizales River (Mexico) and Lake Petén-Itza (Guatemala).

Thanks for the info.

Oh wow they are so beautiful. My favorite fish is Thoricythus Meeki. I had a breeding pair. Right now I have 6 of the off spring growing out together with a red dot severum they look really good together. I sold off and gave away the rest. I would love to get some Pasionis to go with my group but like the others said they aren't available by me.

I will come out and ask what I know the others are wondering. Are you selling the fry? If so will you ship? :D put me down for some if you do.
Have to say it again they are so beautiful congrats!

Glad you like them. Unfortunately, I can't ship to the US. Too costly in that you would require an import permit, and I would have to have US Fish and Wildlife examine (and charge me) to allow them across. A real bummer!! Sorry.

That is a bumber. Well I will just enjoy the pics of yours. Cool video too. I think it is funny how quickly Thoricthus can turn from peaceful to psychotic. Looks like the Pasionis are no exception.

Online vendors occasionally have T. pasionis for sale. Currently they are available from The Wetspot in Oregon if you are willing to pay the shipping costs to NY (http://www.wetspottropicalfish.com/index.php/fish). Jeff Rapps (Tangled Up In Cichlids - NJ) carries them once in a while, but they are not currently listed on his website.

I have a pair that I bought at an LFS about three years ago. It was an impulse buy and I haven't regretted it. They look great and have a very peaceful temperament relative to other cichlids.
