From my experience, the curriculum in a private school seems much better and the expectations for students success is higher because of a much lighter load on the teachers(24 students vs. the 35 students in a public school). I think that alone is worth it. On the other hand, there are a lot of snobby arrogant kids but not more than any punks in the public school system.
2 of my 3 kids are in private school and my 3rd will be next year. Yeah it costs an arm and a leg but IMHO it's well worth it in the long run--especially because the public schools in our area are trash.

The school doesn't make the man, rather his attitude and willingness to learn and grow. When parents only have money to offer they will give the best just so they feel better.

As a teacher in a public school I may be biased, but I believe that public schools can be just as good as most private schools. My school is a small (~140 students) K-8 and I think it is just as good as any private school out there. I will have 19 4th graders in my class this year and you can be sure that I know each of the students' needs and will do my best to help them get a good education.
In Oregon public school teachers are held to much higher standards than private school teachers - public schools require that their teachers have a Master's Degree, private schools can hire whoever they want. Also we have very strict regulations regarding teacher conduct and have to undergo extensive background checks which private school teachers do not.
That said, I realize that in some places the public school system is not doing well due (for the most part) to underfunding and overcrowding...
There certainly are some good private schools out there, but I do agree that in most cases you would be better off saving the money for college rather than spending it on their primary/secondary education. My family is as a whole very well educated - my dad was a Dentist, my uncle owns an engineering firm, my other uncle worked for Intel, my aunt is a Professor of Radiology (formerly Department Head) at Stanford, and my brother teaches Theoretical Physical Chemistry at a university in Indiana. Every one of them went to public school K-12. You certainly don't need to go to a private school to succeed and whether or not it increases your chances of success is debatable to say the least.
So, in short, I agree wholeheartedly with your dad's side of the family.![]()
