Thoughts about private school

HAHA! I hope you are just joking. Right?

its the truth. insurance is a scam too. you just keep on paying and paying and nothing ever happens. now your just down thousands and thousands for no reason.
COLLEGE+INSURANCE=SUPER SCAMS

From my experience, the curriculum in a private school seems much better and the expectations for students success is higher because of a much lighter load on the teachers(24 students vs. the 35 students in a public school). I think that alone is worth it. On the other hand, there are a lot of snobby arrogant kids but not more than any punks in the public school system.
2 of my 3 kids are in private school and my 3rd will be next year. Yeah it costs an arm and a leg but IMHO it's well worth it in the long run--especially because the public schools in our area are trash.

Very true. Key point here for me is private school should be a strong consideration more so, when the public schools in the area are known to be under-performing.

I would also say there are private schools that under-perform as well. You have to look at the individual schools and you can't clump public school vs private school. I think trying to find a balance for our children is key. I know some kids that go to private schools & they are stressed as hell due to the high expectations, high work load, high competition, -- they literally stop acting like kids way too prematurely in my opinion. You also have to let kids be kids. Ideally, look at the individual school & ask yourself, is this right for my children.

I was sent to catholic school in the 5th grade & very happy for it. My public school was known for drug dealing & gangs -- not the best place for an education. Now, had I lived in a "good" neighborhood, I am sure public school would have been more than adequate.

On a side note, the thing that gets me is some parents seem to think that the more they spend on their children's education, the better education they are getting --- not necessarily true....

What!! Insurance is also a scam now!! I guess I got lucky when I totaled my car and the insurance company paid for the repairs + rental. Hmmm.... You go to college to learn how to think, not just to get a degree. I agree with you that in general it is way overpriced, but certainly not a waste of money. It's all good man.

As someone that just graduated from a private high school, and went to public school before that, I feel like I have a little insight, I believe the type of kid determines if private school is the right choice. The teachers at my school knew everyone's name and really cared about your success. If you have a kid that works well in small groups and better with teachers that actually care, then it's worth it. A lot of private schools are college preparatory schools, and the classes are harder and require actual effort. This is what killed me in school, I was doing well through sophomore year and then took on the second hardest schedule in the school during my junio year. I couldn't handle the workload and crumbled. Now I'm at a jc (although I did get into colleges, just not the one I wanted :(....). From the stories I've heard about the public school in my town, the teachers just don't care at all. Now while I wouldve probably gotten better grades, would I be more ready for college? I don't think so. Right now it looks like most of my early classes will just be review and really easy.

Let me just put this fact in: while I do live in a good area, the public schools here are really poor, and just awful because of that. Like 3 elementary schools and one middle school has closed (the one I went to).

As a teacher in a public school I may be biased, but I believe that public schools can be just as good as most private schools. My school is a small (~140 students) K-8 and I think it is just as good as any private school out there. I will have 19 4th graders in my class this year and you can be sure that I know each of the students' needs and will do my best to help them get a good education.

In Oregon public school teachers are held to much higher standards than private school teachers - public schools require that their teachers have a Master's Degree, private schools can hire whoever they want. Also we have very strict regulations regarding teacher conduct and have to undergo extensive background checks which private school teachers do not.

That said, I realize that in some places the public school system is not doing well due (for the most part) to underfunding and overcrowding... :irked:

There certainly are some good private schools out there, but I do agree that in most cases you would be better off saving the money for college rather than spending it on their primary/secondary education. My family is as a whole very well educated - my dad was a Dentist, my uncle owns an engineering firm, my other uncle worked for Intel, my aunt is a Professor of Radiology (formerly Department Head) at Stanford, and my brother teaches Theoretical Physical Chemistry at a university in Indiana. Every one of them went to public school K-12. You certainly don't need to go to a private school to succeed and whether or not it increases your chances of success is debatable to say the least.

So, in short, I agree wholeheartedly with your dad's side of the family. :headbang2

The way I see it all that matter is college. Nothing wrong with a public school as long as the kid is focused. You can be a drop out, have a GED, be homeschooled whatever. College is where it all counts.

The school doesn't make the man, rather his attitude and willingness to learn and grow. When parents only have money to offer they will give the best just so they feel better.

Exactly the kid is gonna learn if they wanna learn. I went to public school and there was some really smart and focused kids. And those same kids went on to college and are successful. I know some college people now that are wasting everyone's time and money. Failing classes and just not taking school serious. I think it doesn't matter what school(s) you go to, what matters is the person whether they are focused and serious. I think private schools are a waste of money.

That's awesome. If I was in Oregon I'd probably have no prob sending my kids to public schools. I wish it were the case in my area.
My mom is a 5th grade teacher and has 36 students in her class is so underfunded it's sick. Her principal told her that she "should have no problem teaching put of a phonebook.".

Odd Dan cuz Oregon public schools here are broke and constantly shutting down and consolidating into more kids in less schools. it's been that way for 10 years. All this shows is everyone has to make the best decision for their area. So many factors

Oh yeah, Momma BOC is a teacher but in Washington.
