Thoughts on fluval fx6

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 304b has been running fine for about a month. Just haven't figured out how to do more than 30% water change without having to reprime the whole filter.

You can pack a heck of a lot more biomedia in the Eheim. The only downside is that it doesn't have the trays like Fluval.

Although I will get a 2262 soon as well, this is one thing I DONT like about it. It will make maintenance more labor intensive.

On another note: if you use a PREFILTER Sponge on an FX5/6 intake, your motor and impeller should never see sand grit unless your ceramic media is disentegrating. Use the stock black sponge pad on the very bottom tray of the FX to prevent that. DONE!

Damn I'm glad I've lucked out ... I didn't know some people had problems like what you've mentioned D.wolf

In with you, I've had four different fx5's for over ten years total service and have yet to have a single problem. I'm currently running two of them on a 150.

I've been running two Fluval FX 6 on my 180 Gallon for about 1 week. No issues so far and its a very quiet machine. I would recommend the FX 6

I don't understand why you're having this problem, but I do 50%-75% weekly and never lose prime, with it running OR unplugged (depends on mymood). I will admit however that adding some teflon tape between the intake tubes coupling areas (where the intake pipes/extension-meet/join) was second nature to me when i installed it. Maybe everyone does'nt think the way I do...dunno?

Also, I have 5 of these (3 Aquatops/2 sunsun) as well as 1-FX5 and 1-FX6, never a problem with any of them. I think some perople make things harder than they have to be, for instance cleaning a canister filter by weekly/ monthly is rediculous to me. Even Eheim does'nt recommend that often!

In MY opinion, If you are losing that much flow you are either using those fine polishing pads, or are SERIOUSLY OVERSTOCKED. I NEVER open my can(setup as BIO ONLY) more than every 90 days, and I've never lost more than 25-30% flow I estimate. I do however use prefilter sponges on ALL my intakes, as well as using HOB's for mechanical because they are easier to clean monthly. Nitrates hover at 20-40ppm with 50% waterchanges weekly...

This has just been MY experiences the last 28 years(I still have my first canister - Magnum 330), yours may vary....

One last thing (in regards to the losing prime on 304B during water changes), you're NOT lowring the water BELOW the intake are you? Surely you're not right???

thats about the only way I see someone losing prime on their can. There'd be literally no other reason you would lose prime on any filter. I guess if the intake line is cracked or has a hole then that may be another reason.

On my 302b I slid a piece of supplied green tubing over the intake tube where it telescopes. Mine didnt seem very water tight upon first impression and it was close to the rim of the tank so I did that before I ever set it up. I also never used the the surface skimmer.

I never had an issue, and im happy to say I replaced the plumbing with painted 1/2" pvc and everything is great. I always loved sunsun filters but hated the plumbing
