thoughts on monster glass tank options and moving them down stairs...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
maybe can consider fibreglass tank with a viewing panel? It's super lightweight.... 1 person has no problems with carrying a 180 gallon

as long as the height is 2ft (so you can move it through the door sideways)... you can have a much bigger tank

That's true, but the aesthetic doesn't work with where I'm putting it. It's a somewhat nice home office space in my basement. My man cave, basically. I also like being able to see into it from any angle.

Will your stairs support 400lbs PLUS the weight of the guys moving it?

Build it in place. The stand too. Much safer from several aspects, including longevity of the silicone seals.

Plus
it
can
be
BIG
!

Yeah, you've got me thinking ... it would take up a lot of space, but I could make a 84x30x30 work. 310 gallons. That would be sweet. Glass would weigh 550 pounds total, but no panel would be more than about 150 pounds.

But seriously... my wife would think I lost my mind. And she'd probably be right. I can't imagine the conversation ... "Honey, I'm ordering several thousand dollars of glass panels weighing 550 pounds, and I'm going to assemble them into a 7 foot aquarium in the basement. Oh, and once it's done, it won't fit back out the door. No, seriously, it'll be fine."

No, I probably can't do this lol. At least not right now.

Ever considered an plywoodtank?

Yeah, I've thought about it ever since Joey Mullen built one several years back. His was 370 gallons and ended up looking really nice. I ended up setting up an Aqueon 125 at that time.

Unfortunately, I can't take on a big project like this right now. Too much other stuff going on in my life.

This might be my end game in the hobby though... I'd probably build in the 500 - 600 gallon range, maybe 8x3x3.

aesthetic wise may need some work like sticking some panels on the frame... but it is possible to have viewing panels on all 4 sides

i guess you got to choose between, aesthetic or tank size.... at least it's a nice problem to have

Yeah, side viewing panels would be a must for me. Or at least on 1 of the sides if I built it into a corner.

I think plywood tanks can look nice. Joey's looks good enough to me. You can see the finished aquarium pretty well in this video.

So I figured it out!

Tell the wife she gets new floors in what ever room is above where you want the tank.
Cut hole in floor to fit tank, lower it down with ropes, patch hole, "New floors"

Your a genius man

. . . it won't fit back out the door. . .

Give me a razor blade and a piece of fishing line and a couple of Bic pens and I will take it apart and you can take the pieces out the door the same way they came in.

But as for the other part I understand about having a spouse, because I had to give up 4 other tanks before my wife would allow me to put a 125 in the living room.

I've been telling people here that it was 6, but the truth is two of those six became sumps for the other ones that are still going, and so it's hard to count them.

Well actually they're hidden inside of cabinets so it's hard for my wife to count them.
