Agreed, they're not great swimmers or jumpers, so unless there's a cord to shimmy up through the gap you should be fine.

If you are really worried, us a piece of tie wire. The kind of plastic coated wire that comes tied round electrical wire or round the wires on electrical goods or phone cables etc. the kind some use to tie sandwhich bags. You can use that to tie diagonal and make the gaps smaller still, to ease your dads worry.
