Thoughts on this Stock List for a 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had problems keeping Carpintis & H. Turquoise together.
But, you may be ok for awhile if yr list is growing out together.

I wouldn't do it and maybe only do 6 max of those on your list. I love all those fish and it would be very difficult to choose. If it were me I would get a 250g+ for that list.

I've seen lots of "overstocked" tanks that function just fine. this seems to be the only forum on the internet where people would suggest 4 fish for a 180 gallon tank. to be completely honest get all the fish as there is a higher chance they will tolerate each other as adults if they grow up together, and i guess when you do encounter these "blood baths" you just remove a fish or two until you get the perfect balance that works for you. there is nothing wrong about taking a gamble, it is your tank and put what you want in it.
that was my un-mfk responce.

here is my MFK responce

you can only have 1 fish in that tank and you need to have a 125 gallon sump to filter it.

Have you been to the forum on cichlidae.com? They told me the only thing I could stock in a 90g was a pair of firemouths. True story...

Dan I say go for it. No one can say with a blank statement that you will have aggression or a so called blood bath. I am not saying nothing will happen but the only way you will know is trail and error. I remember when I got 8 managuense everyone said that they would not get along. I have had them now for over 3 years and no problems.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I do not just want a pair of festae. I want to try and make a community work. I do have other tanks to remove any and all of the fish if there are problems, and will stay very diligent. A couple of questions:
1. If I were to take a few of these out, which should I remove? The aggressors or the fish that would be weaker?
2. What fish do you think will be the most problematic or dominant?
3. Any other general ideas?

Thanks!

Interesting point of view, but we are not talking about just any old fish here. 4 fish in a 180 is very doable but these are large, aggressive and territorial cichlids we are taking about. 12 on his list to be exact..... including a Festae......

In all honesty, no one on these forums will be able to tell you if it's going to work or not, from from a bioload standpoint alone, you would be very overstocked even with all your extra filtration. Aside from that, once these fish reach maturity(assuming they would) space will become an issue. Overstocking can sometimes work, like with Africans, but with large cichlids your chances go down considerably.

I have 6 cichlids in a 300 and I have a feeling some might have to be removed at some point. I'm attempting to keep them together, but you just don't really know. Ideally, I'd like to keep the larger cichlids in there, (Midas,Festae,Freddy and a Jd) but I'm ready to make adjustments as needed.

I think your best chances would be to Introduce them as juvis together, but 12 cichlids is gonna be tough. Just my 2 cents. Good luck
