Thoughts on this Stock List for a 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am not too sure if a Carpintis is just as aggressive as a cyanoguttatus, but when I had 6 inch cyano,he was really aggressive in my 125 gallon set up even though him and the female Salvini had their own spot on the right side of the tank and only certain cichlids were allowed to come into their territory. So I hope the Carpintis wont try to attack every fish when it reaches 6 inches.

I think the festae will be the aggressor or maybe the jag/green terror if I decide to go with that. Do you think the carpintis will beat on the festae?

IMO you should do a little (or even a lot) research on all the possible fish you want to keep together and then go from there. That will give you a general idea on how things will work. Because trust me, as someone said earlier in this thread, 8 Jags together in the same tank for 3 yrs and "no problems" is definitely the exception and not the rule.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I do not just want a pair of festae. I want to try and make a community work. I do have other tanks to remove any and all of the fish if there are problems, and will stay very diligent.

Here is my 265g tank five weeks ago. Most of these fish grew up together since 2-3" and were in this tank for about a year. They are all between 7-10" in the pic, except a couple. I really wanted all kinds of fish and decided to do just that, however I knew full well that there was zero chance of me keeping all of them and as long as you know and understand you can do it IMO. As full grown fish they are not all gonna fit in your tank. Fish grow pretty quick until they hit the 10" mark and then they really slow down and start putting on girth. If you were to grow them to about 7-10" and then choose which to keep, I think you'll be fine. I will say that it was tough for me to cut ties with my fish and many fish keeper don't like to do this. I will never do it this way again as I feel like I wasted too much money and time on fish I had to sell for a fraction of what they were worth. So, take it however you want... can it be done, IME...yes... will I ever do it again lookinf back... no, I will not. I hope this helps and good luck.

First off, that tank is amazing. I am extremely jealous and I hope one day my fish look half as good as that. That festae especially is stunning. I don't think I could part with my fish, but what I do plan on doing is getting more tanks over time to move fish as needed. Second, thanks for the advice! Whats your feeding schedule and what do you feed those fish?

I am working on a 210g (72x24x29) set up right now that will have 2 FX5's and a 18w turbotwist UV for filtration.

MY stock will probably be a Midas (already own, quite peaceful), a Pearsei that I will get from another MFK member in town and possibly a Argentea. Then I will have 5 silver dollars and a Pleco. To me any more stock than this and it would be a war zone. Ive tried multiple small cichlids together in my 120g and its been hard to find a good fit, let alone to try as many as 8 to 12.

Well, first off, thank you. I did NOT sell my Festae tho, lol. That is great if you aquire more tanks over time, but I also planned on that... other things come up ya know?? All I'm saying is those are big fish and to keep all at their grown size will take many LARGE tanks. Just being real is all. When small I fed them 4-5 times per day as they grew I went down to 1-2 times per day, which is what I feed them now. I feed Hikari Cichlid Gold as my staple with Massavoire every other day or every third day. I give them frozen Krill, earth worms and Algea chips on occassion. Good luck.

I am not sure since I never owned a Carpintis, but I know a Cyanoguttatus can be a very aggressive towards other certain tank mates they don't like. Also cuban cichlids are very nice,I have one that is about 2 inches and this little one was already shoving Salvini out of the way, because she went into its cave,so they can defend themselves quite well even at small size.
