You're correct that he's not a YBS, but he's also not a painted. He seems to be some type of cooter. He actually looks a lot like a peninsula cooter which definitely would have to be a release if found in Jersey.

You may be right, I don't see that mark on the side of his head that's characteristic of YBS, sometimes it's sort of a sideways "Y" shape...cooter is possible but if there's more than one at the spot as CF says then we have a mystery.

Pics...here's a couple of YBS:

And here's a cooter:

They look pretty similar, but neither would get up that far north.

how come you dont think its a painted turtle? and if it is one of the two you have mentioned, wat makes it a big deal?

Professional manner? MFK is an online forum.
Educated? I identified the fish, brought up the fact that they should be responsibly rehoused, and gave a quick explanation why.

It doesn't hurt to be direct sometimes either, especially when you see someone mixing fish from a genre that you love with aggressive centrals without even knowing what species they are.

That begs another question. You bought them from a shop - did you even ask what they were? I'm sure they would have known.
you have no idea if they were in the dsame tank to begin with :headshake

THANKS AND WAT DO U MEAN "HOPE THEY ARE NOT IN THE SAME TANK"

Unfortunately now, the word "were" is very relevant, and people are trying to make me out to be the bad guy.

Here's a baby eastern painted turtle:

That red would be there on any painted turtle, I don't see it on yours. Here's an adult:

The 2 spots on each side of the head are dead giveaways, painted turts from the northeast will have those every time.

Not a huge deal, but if you're seeing turtles like yours in the wild there's a breeding population of non-native turtles there.

Red-eared Slider (
Trachemys scripta elegans) Introduced Species, could it be this or maybe a eastern painted turtle(chrysemys picta picta)
