Tig and jur cohabitation: what are realistic expectations?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Still waiting to take a current pic. When i do water change they often both sit on the bottom beside each other. But I would like to add I did absolutely nothing more than put them both in the same tank. I think the key for a jur, tig combo is my jur likes a higher perch on the driftwood while the tig stays on the bottom minimizing the time they interact. Other than that just pure dumb luck, some combos work some don't. The tig is a misfit missing a piece of gill plate since before I took him in so i wasn't worried about trying them together again. Who knows maybe one will kill the other someday, not going to say it will never happen. But again they have been together for a few years and doing fine.

Cool down, Rob! You are raising even my blood pressure. This is the only successful case we know of, or do we? Anyone?

Calm down? NEVER! :P

I can't help but wonder if the lack of people trying this combo is an artifact of everyone saying it doesn't work. A self fulfilling prophesy, if you will. Since we all "know" that this combo doesn't work, no one ever tries, so we never see examples of it working (except 93svt of course).

93svt, thanks for the precious info. So little do we know about this combo so everything counts.

Rob, yeah, a viable hypothesis. Remains to be seen. Not to forget though that they do not get along normally when small - everyone agrees on that (unless maybe two 3"-ers in a 300 gal) and that the scientific literature professes consistently they are territorial and aggressive to many fish, esp. their genus members and kin.

Thank you my friend. I agree that the literature and behavior of babies is definitely troubling, but I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is to try.

FOR SCIENCE!!!

Aw man, there goes fishing for blue cats.

I think this, and separate areas(upper and lower) to call their own are a big part of the reason my combo is currently working... Mine were both reintroduced at a more mature age.

I wonder why the jur is staying on that driftwood and if it was not for the tig, would he be favoring the bottom (as is apparently the norm for these cats)?

Anyway, everyone would agree with you. It definitely helps - few large tanks offer more than one level for a catfish to settle on, so this appears no coincidence but the cause and effect thing.

As for the aggression as a function of age/size, it (almost?) always worsens with fish growing and sexually maturing. My point was that if they don't play nice when small, the problems would grow in pace with the fishes. But again, so few people have and report here on adult jurs and tigs and almost never on their combo.

We need more data points but are happy to have just yours for now :)
