Tiger Oscar and Red Devil not getting along...need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Now if I get rid of the RD, cause I can't afford another tank, nor can I afford a bigger tank, would I be able to add more fish in with the Tiger Oscar and Jack Dempsey, cause I feel that if I add more fish, the JD and Oscar will attack the new smaller fish.

Then maybe you can go to your LFS and look to see if they have any large fish and would offer you some sort of a trade? I'd look for fish like...

GT, cons (preferably almost full grown as they grow pretty slow), Freddy, loiselli, maybe a smaller (4") texas cichlid (either cyano or carpintis). Just food for thought

Most likely I am going to get rid of the RD. The fish is a monster. Any idea of how to get rid of the RD? Who would want it or what fish store to bring it back to?

Its possible to add more fish but it will be trail and error.

But touch will have to get rid of the rd.

Options for tank mates include.

Salvini
convict
firemouth
severum ( i have seen this before but they are normally quite peaceful)

These are all stay quite small exept the severum.

You can get one of these and some smaller dithers Congo tetras, giant danios

You could post it on the marketplace here, you could put it on craigslist, and also offer it to your LFS (local fish store). Most big chain stores won't accept it, but mom and pops style stores might.

Seems everyone has counted out the JD as far as future aggression. I had a single JD and O in a 125g tank since juveniles and when the JD hit about 4-5" and the O 6-7" the JD relentlessly tortured my O and I had to remove him and get him his own 95g. JD can be aggressive suckers too, plus when they see another cichlid in their tank that is larger than them they see it as a threat. I'm pretty positive that's why my situation happened.

Same JD was fine in the 95g with a smaller pink con, FM, and large school of GD.

I agree with everyone else that there really isn't anything you can do to make them get along. Time to play musical tanks, or start relocating specific fish. (the aggressor as already pointed out several times) Such is how things go when keeping aggressive/semi-aggressive cichlids. :)

I wouldn't do congos or giant danios as dithers for a full grown oscar. They would swallow them whole. If you want dithers for oscars, either silver dollars, or full grown tiger barbs (even that is risky) can work.

Ps if you keep salvini long enough the males can get to be 7"

The giant danios and Congo tetras get to about 2.5 inches and are really quick thought they would work! I wouldnt do silver dollars as they get big and would then make you over stocked imo.

To each his own, though giant danios could work, I would just feel more comfortable with the SDs, simply because they aren't "torpedo" shaped which is ideal for consumption
