My opinion is that Tigrinus is a cross between an African Zebra and a skateboard!!!! Ha Ha Ha !!!!!!! :woot: :clap :headbang2  They come from muddy rapids in S.A. . They are a warm water "Trout" of a catfish. They need lots of straight line current. A specially designed tank with output on one end and overflow on the other is the way to go . And yes , I do own one. Rock on fishgeeks!!!!!!!! :grinyes:

lets see the pics a tig dead or alive is nice :D

I'm no expert but I have raised a couple. My current tig is 12" and I raised him from 4".......temp is about 80 F.....eats mostly market shrimp....grew from 4 to 12 in about 6-7 months.... my ph out of the tap it about 7.5. I do weekly 25% water changes and have a lot of filtration. Fish seems pretty good so far.
I don't claim that my conditions are ideal.... but this so far has been my experience

great info guys... time to cut down food intake for my tig. Been feeding him on a daily basis, will start feeding him on alternated days instead.. great thing u guys raised about the hump, one shuld not overfeed tigs

i saw a jurunese at the lfs today but too bad , it was already reserved..

Just want to share my 20" Tig I bought from a hobbyist here in the Phil. last June, 2007. I measured him before putting him into my tank. Unfortunately after 2 weeks, he died of severe infection because he ate my 5" Flagtail and several clownloaches.
Here he is with my Dats

Here he is dead after 2 weeks

The most of them die beceause ( I think when they reach sexual maturety) go swimming in their tank like a mad man and swim them selves to death to the glass of your tank.

Here is what you do.....when that occurs (its females that it happens to)

Massive 60-70% DAILY water changes 2-3 days in a row.

If your fish is weaned onto dead foods reintroduce live feeder fish.

Increase the current to MASSIVE levels.

Raise temp to 85

Provide large pipes/driftwood for cover

This will assist in helping her reabsorb her eggs.

Um, I don't know about America but here in the UK several stores that have tigs in stock have confirmed to me that most of them are captive bred, so yes they are captive bred.

They do not know what they are talking about.... NO tigs... NONE ZERO EVER !
Have been captive bred.

a lot of thing have happened since this thread 1st started :D

i have grown 1 tig from 10inch to 24inch pics below :D with no problems at all and my rays bred in the same tank :D

i now have another tig that has grown from 10 to 14inch no problems at all

all i have done is keep the temp at 86 exept when i do the 25% water changes twice per week the temp then drops to 80

i also use something called polyfilter in my inturnal filters which acts like a fresh water skimmer the POLYFILTER is the only thing diffrent i have added to my tank and my tig problems are no more :D

the tigs that were lost in the past who knows it may have been a bad batch or over feeding i still think the hump in front of the dorsal fin has something to do with the deaths as the 2 tigs i have had that done great never got that hump

as for feeding when you get a new tig they are very hard to get feeding so i just throw food at them for the 1st few months then i just feed the tank like normal if the tig wants food he will have to come out and get it EAT OR DIE thats the rules in my tank mine eats prawn, pellets, mussel and meal worms

oooops forgot the pic :D
