i had one for about 9 months.. this was like 2-3 years ago
bought it at 4" grew to about 8".. i had no clue what i was doing with it ..

then i bought a few at the 'grey' size 1" grew them to 4" and my heater poped and killed them... had them about 4 months i think... i got them in febuary

thats the same as the 2 small ones i lost got them at 4inch they grew very well to 8inch then bang gone

mmm back to the temp thing 80f or 84f

I had several of them and I know alot of guys who had / have them. I don't think they are sutable for a tank. The most of them die beceause ( I think when they reach sexual maturety) go swimming in their tank like a mad man and swim them selves to death to the glass of your tank. I've heard and see this with maney Tigrinus. Also with Goslinea Platinema and Jurense.
Regards
Frank
PS I 've never seen it with Sorubim Lima strange?

Oh boy, here we go again. The tigrinus "mysterious death" discussion part 2. Only now we're going to harrass the MonsterFishKeepers people. :screwy:
You want a healthy tig? Here's what you do:

1) No community tanks. Keep with either similar, slow eating catfish(Brachyplatystoma juruense, flavicans, goslinia, etc.) or alone.

2) Crsytal clear, excellent water, ideally with a current.

3) Don't overfeed. A good, full catfish belly twice a week will be sufficient.

4) Keep temp between 82-84 Degrees F.

Other than that, there's not a whole lot you can do. If you stil llose one, it was either extremely stressed, had parasites, or had a heart attack.

End of story.

LOL!

I prefer to keep the temp at 80F. Sounds good though!

I agree :clap My temp is at 80f right now and I think it is a good balance. The higer the water temp is the less disolved 02 in solution. I have my 6" Tig in a 180 all by himslef. I originally had 7 Red Hooks in with him and he seemed skittish and wouldn't swim around much. I keep him alone now in the 180 and he cruises the tank often and seems alot more relaxed. My 180 has dual overflows which lead to a DIY 29 gallon wet/dry with 2 Mag Drive 7's for returns. I also have 2 Eheim 2217's so there is alot of water flow in the tank, and I think the wet/dry oxygenates the water well? He currently eats silversides and krill. As soon as he gets a little bigger I'll start giving him cut up shrimp and fish fillets. He won't eat earthworms and I have no idea why? So far he looks good, he my favorite fish ever and I hope he lives a very long time!!!!

Oh yeah, I use 100% RO/DI water reconstituted with Kent R/O Right and straight baking soda (to boost alk to KH=3) to a PH of 7.4, TDS 100, KH=3. It seems good so far??

Blackwater,
That's an awesome system for your tig...he should grow fast and beautiful in a set up like that. Do you plan on adding any tankmates?

So far my tig isn't too keen on silversides or krill. He loves bloodworms and feeders, though. I keep all my tanks at 82 and above to avoid Ich outbreaks...just a personal preference.

I hear ya on the ich outbreaks. I received my Tig along with 7 Red Hooks in the same shipment and put them all in the 180 togeter BIG MISTAKE, a couple of the Red Hooks developed Ich and I removed all of them right away. 2 days later the Tig had it. I treated him for 9 days with Ich Guard II and it worked so now I am not risking it, the 180 is his alone. He is way more active with no tankmates and his streamers are growing back (they were gone when I got him) It only took 24 hours to get him eating Krill, he is a great fish. I'd like to set up one of those 125 tanks that glass cages makes that has the same footprint as a 180 so I can get a Mystus Wyckii/Black Devil Catfish, I hear they are one of the meanest fish around!! My tank is at 80f, maybe I should bump it to 82??? I just went with what it said on planet catfish and set it to the middle of the range at 80? but you are right about the ich!

Ich is always present in the water and if your tig ever gets severely stressed for some reason, it can strike. That's why I don't risk it by keeping the temp at 82 or above. The fish seem to like the warmer temps...

Cool blackwater- seems like the tig is spoiled silly! hahaha. They sure are awesome fish!

Ich is always present? Wha?? That i did not know...hmmm
