Tigrinus vs juruense with asian aro?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We are all in the same boat, guys. My 3' TSN named "Terroristo" cost me $30 but has eaten/killed about a grand worth of other fish in a 4000 gal pond - fish I actually paid for, not freebies.

Yep I definitely think every big predatory cat keeper has been here and most of us left scratching our heads thinking surely he couldn't of eaten that! and wow, I have accidentally fed them a lot of expensive meals but don't think I'm up to a grands worth, not yet anyway... haha

get the tigrinus i have been mixing them with asian aros for 20 years with no probs the jurence may work for a bit but they get bigger and are a bit more aggressive

and come on lets be fair who would pick a jurence over a tig

get a tig about 12inch as they are stonger

the other good thing is tigs and aros grow at about the same rate

I did lol.

They're both beautiful fish, but I honestly prefer the juruense.

Some guys who compare these fish find they can't afford the tig, also. That's not the case for me (lol), it was just a pleasant surprise to find that the fish I prefer was an order of magnitude cheaper than my second choice fish! :D

I prefer the juruense also, not because of cost but because I like their body shape better than a tigs.

if you like dull colours and have tank space for a 3ft+ cat get a jurence

if you like bright blue and a fish that stays a bit smaller get a tig

the body shape is near the same its just it takes a tig a little longer to get there

Really? 3ft? Juruense get 23" max a similar size to tigs.

Yep! Essentially the same size in length, Jurs just may get a little more girth and a little higher back. Never seen or heard of a Jur reaching 28-30 inches much less 3'. And I have seen plenty that have very nice markings.
Mine has nice blueish purple with smaller white striping and really nice white tail markings. Nothing dull about it.

I agree with the above... and will continue doing so untill I see a >2' juruense catfish.

T1KARMANN, might you kindly point us to the evidence that 3'+ jurs exist? If you have one and could provide a nice pic with a ruler, that'd be awesome!

The only place I've come across so far that states a "big" jur is "Fishing World Records" that cites a 6' 8" catch, over 220 lbs but I tend to think this is a mistake. It just cannot be: http://www.fishing-worldrecords.com/scientificname/Brachyplatystoma juruense/show

Other than that, again, I never came across any other supported, credulous info that would suggest that Brachyplatystoma juruense gets significantly over 2'. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=566

Here is my 2-footer:

Dull colors? I think not. ;)
