I just picked one up today, about 2" long. He came into the lfs mixed with a bunch of kribs.
I will get some pics when he settles into the quarantine tank. Some rather bad pics I took at the lfs yesterday so I could get an id are here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57278

Anyone else have one or has had one in the past? Any personal experiences and info would be appreciated. I know they are supposed to be quite aggressive and have read mixed reports of them attaining max. lengths of between 8 to 15". He will go into a 75gal, hopefully thats big enough till adulthood.

Burt:)

I had a breeding pair of Tilapia Mariae and the female was SO aggressive they had 1 lot of fry and things were going ok apart from the fact she would attack my adult tigerO but luckly she is big enough to fight back. Then they had another load a few months later but i didnt let them develope (i took out the slate they were on ) well she was so ticked off with this she killed her mate within 2 hours, i couldnt remove him as i had nowhere to put him :( so i had to take her bak to the shop where we got her from) and now i am left with 9 babys but there growing fast and i can see there aggesive side coming though already so be warned make sure they go in with a fish that can hold its ground to fight them off.:D

Thats a great looking fish Lillydafish.

Mine will be going into a 75gal all by himself.

Did they get the red on them only when breeding or is it there all the time?

Burt:)

Talk to any memebers here in South Florida, the ditches are full of those tilapias

they were staple here in Portugal around 10 /15 years ago. We used them for feeders because they were such prolific breeders...then vanished, no one wants them..most of them ended up in our rivers and lakes I think...

she got the red on her when she was being protective over her fry and when she was calm she would go back to normal not a bit of red in sight

Actually, that's incorrect. The Tilapia in the "ditches" are Montezuma Tilapia, not Mariae...
