tilapia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
umm well firstly he has shown some extremely intense reds but my big male mozzambique turns dark whereas this smaller one is always brown

No on the Mozambique & Nile, and it is a Mariae. It is a juvie, over time it will get more recognizable. Great fish!

its not Oreochromis niloticus i raised couple of them few years back from 3" to 12" and they never looked like that.
im allmost sure ots a young Mariae.

p.s.
i saw tilapia zilli living in seawater in the Mediterranean Sea shore.
and sometimes i would feed my saltwater fish on them, some would get away and live in the tank until they got eaten.

yeah here in our place fisherman put tilapia in saltwater, coz the tilapia in saltwater is tastier than the one in rivers, and i can attest to that

its actually a male. btw did u guz know tilapia have been bred in full saltwater conditions

Introduced Oreochromis sp. (hybrid cultivar) are abundant in the Salton Sea. They've carved out quite a niche for themselves there.

O. mossambicus can adapt to salt water, but not every Tilapia can!! So be sure to know what fish you have.
We use O. mossambicus in the lab for that very reason, but if I remember correctly the Nile can't.
It requires huge morphological changes in the fish, especially the gills, kidney and intestines. That's why it can only be done slowly.

Just some info for those who are interested in keeping a Tilapia in salt water. (It does affect how a fish tastes. :D )

Technically Oreochromis sp. aren't Tilapia anyhow.
The genus Tilapia has been restricted to pairing substrate spawners and according to other sources there is only one species that should belong in the genus as it is. Right now it's just a "lump genus" like Cichlasoma or exCichlasoma.
