Tiny discovery that is definately worth sharing.

Aquaponics is an aquaculture/hydroponics hybrid technique where fish and plants grown in an enclosed system. The fish waste is absorbed by the plants as fertilizer and the water is cleaned and returned for the fish. It is something very promising if you are into it. I am researching the feasibility of it as a filtering technique for commercial ornamental fish production.

if you have a hob filter this works great and here is my tank that is only filtered by plants...plants are 9x amazon sward, 1x lilly pad, 1x wal-mart vine plant...

Mods, feel free to clean up this thread a little.

For all the followers:
I am putting the finishing touches on the system expansion. I am doubling the volume of the system while keeping the occupancy approximately the same. I am doing this to seperate the males from females, pups from adults. Photos to follow soon. -FM

I've been growing lucky bamboo in my large sumps. Several of the stalks are taller than I am (I'm 6'4"). The root bundles are huge and the water chems have remained good and stable with slightly reduced waterchange schedules.

Can you post pics please? Or direct me to a thread that already has your pics.

...i have 2 concerns with this setup. One is at night, I do not want to starve my fish of oxygen. i would assume i need a heavy duty amount of plants to do this though, right? ...
Question. for those that have done this in their sump, what lights did u use, and what length of time on and off? i do want to try this, just war
y of what could be a few risks....
Oxygen depletion wont be an issue; since the plant leaves are outside of the water they get their o2 from the air. The roots take up some o2 but to the best of my knowledge it's quite abit less then the leaves. They also get their CO2 from the air. Becuase there is more CO2 in the air then the water is one of the reasons why root submerged, leaf out of the works as well as it does at cleaning the water. These plants are reportedly some of the best for air quaility. So that's a double whammy - cleaner water for the fish and cleaner air for you - this hobby just keeps getting better.

I've read that pothos doesn't like direct light. Mine only get ambient room light and seem to be doing well. I've heard the marble type of pothos will lose the marbling if the plant isn't geting enough light but will still grow fine.

A girl at work had some pothos growing in jars on her desk, she gave me one a few weeks ago and I put it in a 52g. She said it hadn't grown much in the past year, but it's booming for me. I think it may have been root bound in the jar.

When I added this plant the leaves leaked water for about 2 weeks. It's stopped but I have no idea why it did this.

I considered converting some ac110's into pothos contianers. The plan was to cut the sponge in half and let the plant have the other half. From what I've read about aquatic plants is they like detritus and will assist in it's break down (do I hear less filter maintenance too?). I've kind of swayed away from this because of the root binding from the jar. I still may do it on one to see how it goes.

I'm having water quaility issues from the tap so I've turned off my drip system, hopefully the plants will help. My nitrates are 5ppm but them may be from dripping 1/2g an hr, essentially changing 12g's a day on a 52g tank. But that's turned off now so we'll see

The long white roots are new growth.

The stalk in the front left shooting st8 up is new growth, there are several new sprouts in the back as well. This one also gives a little idea of the light the plant is getting. mostly light leaking from the t5 next to it. There is also an overhead light about 8' away with 2 60w bulbs. It's in the basement so no natural light.

This one really shows how the roots balled up in the jar compared to the new root growth.
