Tips and advice on first rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I just did the research and math, and let's say I need 6x turnover rate through my filtration per hour? I'm running close to 1200 gph which is like 10x turnover. And a small sponge filter as well as a uv sterilizer. That's seems like awesome filtration which I never realized I had.

Did you factor in head pressure? Canisters rated gph is figured at zero head and no media in them.

Build a proper tank first then get rays period. Your setting your self up for failure and take advice from people who actually have ray and have had them for a long time with experience. And listen to them.

Yeah I agree man, but people have agreed they will be healthy and happy while in the tank I have currently. Not one person is right, and everyone has there own ways. I don't know why you think I'm set for failure as I have pristine water, a big enought and currently, and ample advice and tips from everyone that has been helpful. But no I did not account for head pressure slippery slimecoat slippery slimecoat , I didn't even realize that wasn't factored in by the companies I assumed it would be. How do you figure that then? Have to measure it at the output manually? I can't, but I know this fx6 is a monster filter, best one available in stores currently I've been told. As well as the cascade 1000 I have, really pushes a lot of water.

For a ray tank I would have min 2 fx6's running plus a sump. My rays produce a ton of waste and I've only for 12" and under. You'll be surprised at how quickly they clog a filter. If your starting with pups you'll be fine. But as they grow you might find you need more filtration

MEDHBSI MEDHBSI see I was looking at one at the store today and almost bought it. But for now I'll just deal with big frequent water changes, not that I wouldn't anyways. Is there any canister better than the fx6? Cuz if there is I would buy it but I think it's the best.

Is a simple sump packed with k1, a sock on the inlet, and some foam on the outlet just as effective a wet dry trickle sump that wastes space with dividers and what not?

Sumps obviously aren't for water clarification necessarily, that's what the fx6 is for, but more for bio filtration, so really just more dirty k1 is better than more filter floss right?

Mine is 3 chambers. 1st is 2 14"x 6" filter socks. Second chamber is K1 with large air bubblers on the bottom. 3rd chamber is the pump. 65g sump and I'm upgrading to 120g sump. I have about 30L of K1 that's constantly churning.
