Tips on Breeding Geos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my pair have spawned 3x and eggs get eaten, but every time the eggs last a little longer.
you could've missed seeing the first eggs.

possibly I missed the eggs. I hope so cuz I would like to see some action. Also another 2 just paired up:) Is it possible for them to lay eggs on driftwood? 2nd pair keeps cleaning the driftwood and making sand craters around it.

Finally witnessed eggs last night. Female laid about 60-80 right on the tank's back panel bottom silicone seam and they were light brownish color. Assuming the male fertilized them. Male was super aggressive guarding them. I was super stoked about it. Was up late last night looking for a used tank to buy to remove the others but by this morning all the eggs we're gone:( Got eaten up...Damn it!

I have never kept red heads before, but if they are mouthbrooders like I think they are, the eggs may be in the parents mouth now. Does it look like they are chewing gum?

OP, sorry but I'm gonna partial hijack your thread. :evil_lol:

I had G altifrons spawn in an overstocked tank, and they both shared mouthbrooding. But until I moved the pairs into separate tanks, the fry would disappear.
The Gymno labiatus should probably be moved into a cooler tank anyway. They are a sub=tropical species.

If you can share some details...
I just picked up a established pair today of G.Altifrons, do they lay eggs then brood the young or are they true mouthbrooders?
How long does the parents hold the fry for if they lay eggs first?
How long does the parents tumble eggs before spitting/releasing if they are true mouth brooders?

Thanks in advance.

No worries:) I can help answer your 1st question. They lay eggs first then brood the young. 2nd and 3rd question I'm not sure as my eggs keep getting eatened lol. All I can say is if u plan to breed your altifrons isolate them from others for a higher % success rate.
