one of my local lfs takes trades and sets the retail price at double the price that they pay the trader. that's a 100% markup. for example, they would give me $50 in store credit, for a 12-inch silver arowana and sell it for $100. the bigger the fish, the more they sell it for.

be happy you get 50% over here the most theylle give anyone is 35% of the retail price..... i was gonna sell fish to them brought them in to expect something good... walked out with my fish :)

I saw a LFS that sold pink tail chalceus at 4" for $19.98 because they were "PINK" :irked:

There is an LFS i hit up every time i'm on fish street, and they have an MBU puffer for USD $164, but the poor thing has been sitting in the same divided (guessing around 5G of space) for the last 2-3 months, maybe longer... and this thing is at around 8 - 10inches... so sadly i don't think hes ever going to move...

The fish are pretty reasonable from what Ive seen around here.
Have seen emperor 400 filters for $125 in 2 different stores.

Tropic Isle Aquarium in Framingham charges silly prices for.... just about everything. $69.95 for 2" Jardini's for example. The list goes on...........

my lfs doesnt have really jacked up prices but all their regular prices are like $5 more then at any other store, but theyre honest about their fish except for them selling thinbar dats as widebar dats but they were still the price of a thinbar

Was it labeled as indo or were they trying to pass it off as something else?.....There is a store here that seems to overcharge on all of their fish so it's a good thing I am not really into what they carry.
i wasnt labled at all..i asked the guy what is this? and he replied "Idk im really into salt water"

The fish food at my LFS is twice the price of major pet chains, and dechlorinator is 3X the price of a nearby competitor. But they always get the oddball fish in and give me fair prices since I tend to bust them on their profit margin once in awhile.

Pet stores are expensive, yeah, but they are businesses. They have huge overheads, there is no money in the pet store business, not if you care about the animals. People (in my town anyways) complain about prices, but when they have a crisis, they come running to us for help. Funny enough, we always end up hearing about how much cheaper we are than Petland. Ordering parts/meds/equipment online is fine, but what happens when you cant wait a few days? What happens when you need something right away, but the lfs went out of business because you bought your stuff online?

It doesn't hurt to support your local economy once in a while.

(that doesn't mean I support over pricing, some places do just charge way too much, but most pet stores can't compete with online pricing)

Edit; on a side note, I agree that most of the fish prices people have been listing here are rediculous. Especially $10 for a convict, we sell them for four bucks.
