to much $$$$ @ the pet stores

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I pay what I pay. If its a healthy specimen I buy it. I wont pay 10 bucks for a convict I am not an idiot. Unless.... its a huge beautiful female with great colors. Even then id pay the cash. TO me the fish make the hobby and each individual is different and can make or break the deal cash is one of the lesser important factors but still certainly is taken note of.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and be pro store.

I have not read the thread and will do so after I post.

First thing, they are running a business. Which means they are there to make a profit and if they can sell a fish for a high price more power to them. After all rent, wages etc.. etc... etc... must be paid somehow.

Second thing, I will use my restaurant for an example. A dinner that I would have done for $35/plate for a normal everyday consumer I did for $75/plate simply because the market for it dictated that I could charge these special consumers that price.

All I can say to people who will try to compare a price on the net or on a fish forum to what they see in the pet store industry is that they really need to come to grips with the reality that a brick and mortar is much more expensive than internet based.

Pet stores are expensive, yeah, but they are businesses. They have huge overheads, there is no money in the pet store business, not if you care about the animals. People (in my town anyways) complain about prices, but when they have a crisis, they come running to us for help. Funny enough, we always end up hearing about how much cheaper we are than Petland. Ordering parts/meds/equipment online is fine, but what happens when you cant wait a few days? What happens when you need something right away, but the lfs went out of business because you bought your stuff online?

It doesn't hurt to support your local economy once in a while.

(that doesn't mean I support over pricing, some places do just charge way too much, but most pet stores can't compete with online pricing)

Edit; on a side note, I agree that most of the fish prices people have been listing here are rediculous. Especially $10 for a convict, we sell them for four bucks.

What will people do when all the small family run stores end up going belly up because their prices are to high.

The corporate destruction of the foundation of a nation is the taking away of the business from small shops. And what is sickening is people are all to ready to save a few bucks doing so without thinking of the damage to thier local economy. Think, how much does that big chain put into your town other than to hire part time employees and send all that cash to some fat cats.

I really do not look at the price I am paying for a fish most of the time I look at the fish. I snapped up my west african lung for $230 without a moments hesitation, even though it was a surrender to the lfs. It was a boon to the owner to make some good money on a fish that he probably did not pay much for.

I just think that people need to come to grips that real life stores need to make some money. I hold in good conscience that I am helping another small business person stay afloat in this day when I support their shop.

one of my local lfs takes trades and sets the retail price at double the price that they pay the trader. that's a 100% markup. for example, they would give me $50 in store credit, for a 12-inch silver arowana and sell it for $100. the bigger the fish, the more they sell it for.

Open you a petstore so you could do the same

4" Jardini for 140$
1-2" Silver Dats for 40$ each
7-10" Tigrinus, don't remember, 400$
8-9" FH 200$

a flowerhorn or 1000 and adult convicts at 10 dollars each

That's good prices friend, there were flowerhorns sold for $10,000 each and the buyer was so happy. Just depends on the quality of the fish..
