Well im going to hopefully be getting a monitor in the next few weeks. but im not exactly sure what kind to get. i would like to get one that is semi aboreal. im new to monitors but not large reptiles. i currently have a large male iguana. that being said im not sure what kind of monitor would be good in an area like that. or is several of a smaller speices could be kept in a large enclosure. looking for some ideas so i can start planning

i will be starting it off in a 45 long. 48x12x17. but the final tank size will be large. the area is an oddball shape. heres a quick drawing with the dimensions. and i will be using probably most of the space and i would like to take advantage of the height. the enclosure will be 3' deep. there is also a window in the back of the wall which i will be keeping there and it will be incouporated into the tank to allow for natural sunlight when weather permits:)

You have a lot of room to work with, what I would do is take a look around and see what species catches your eye. Then come back on here and Ill help you with whatever you may need for it.

ive always liked mangrove monitors, roughnecks, black throats, waters.

then there are the ones i will never be able to afford green trees and the higher end monitors

A large group of dwarf monitors would be awesome. I wouldn't keep anything that gets over 3.5' though, as monitors are extremely active lizards. Blackthroats(5') and typical waters(6-7') are definitely out.

How about a few Peachthroats?

I like where your heads at Seth, although some mangroves wouldnt be too shabby either if you get the island locales that dont get monstrous!

Timors or roughneck (rudicolis, not dumerili). That's what I'd do anyway, in that space. How do you guys heat/light really tall enclosures like that? Just curious what people do with room-type enclosures.

They only really need one hot area, the important thing is that the temps dont drop below 70's in the cool end.

if i were to go with peachthroats what would be a good number? would there be aggression problems?

which mangrove speices would be suitable? im really starting to like them

I'm sorry maybe I missed something. Do you still have your iguana? Was this his cage? Is this separate from him?

I also like the Mangrove idea, especially for someone who's new to monitors.
