to those who keep monitors

yes i still have my iguana. i was going to dedicate that area to him but due to his care in the past by his first owner he wouldnt be able to fully use the area. he has a real hard time climbing. so i am building him an enclosure which suits his needs. high in the air but not a tall cage.

where would you suggest purchasing monitors from? i know about the kingsnake classifieds but im looking for other sources as well. would like to get them at a small size so they can get somewhat used to being handled to make cage upkeep a little better

I would look around kingsnake classifieds, thats where I get mine. I would also venture to the local reptile shows and or shops, sometimes they get decent stock sometimes. I would seriously research..... I think right now your best options for a reasonable price are mangroves, peachthroats, argus monitors. These are midsize animals.

On the handling thing, there is no distinct age as to when the animal will if ever let you hold it or touch it. They will become use to you, but only after youved earned their trust. If youre looking to get an animal that youre going to be taking out all the time and handling it, then a monitor might not be the best choice.

i had my black throat in a 4x4x8 cage and i think that was too small for him. so bigger then that. what about timors or yellow monitors?

Timors or melinus would be fine as well.

A large group of dwarf monitors would be awesome. I wouldn't keep anything that gets over 3.5' though, as monitors are extremely active lizards. Blackthroats(5') and typical waters(6-7') are definitely out.
how big do these dwarf monitors get?

as far as handling in not wanting to be able to handle it everyday. i have a dog for that and i want to handle a big herp i have my iguana that is puppy dog tame. im just wanting to get it to the point where i could go into the cage and clean and not get attacked haha

but right now i am leaning twords a mangrove or a peachthroat. im really liking the peach that you provided in the links above. ive been looking at it on kingsnake for a while now. but im wanting to find a young one because of the starting tank size..

The one from switzer is small. They usually come in at that size, if I find any babies I will let you know....after I supply my stock of course first :)
