Today in Strange Cichlid Behavior...

Just a quick update... I'm totally baffled by this male notatus. He has now completely ousted the female Atabapo and is guarding the fry on his own. The male Atabapo is still defending the territory, and every time he comes back around from chasing away a fish, he briefly and half-heartedly attacks the notatus. I think he's just confused as to why another fish is guarding his fry. The major aggression has stopped and the female Atabapo has joined the rest of her tankmates on the opposite side of the tank. The notatus is still in parenting colors -- black body and bright eyes -- and is constantly twitching and signaling the fry. The fry don't seem confused at all. They seem to recognize him as their parent. Of course, he's not mouthbrooding, so they just huddle around him when they feel threatened.

I'm surprised it has lasted this long. I thought the parents would have scared off the Notatus by now. I guess since the Notatus was already in breeding mode from his own spawn, he is already set to raise fry, no matter who they actually belong to. It is very interesting behavior. How long do you plan on keeping the male Notatus with the Atabapo pair? I'll be checking in for more updates. On a side note, did I see some of your Krobia at Gary's? I saw them yesterday and thought they had to come from you.

I stopped by Gary's today after I read your post and there weren't any Krobia. He told me he hadn't seen any. Maybe you saw the Laetacara curviceps they got in? They are similar in shape and look like young Krobia Xingu.

Not quite the same, but i had two male convicts and one female. The larger male and the female had a spawn and raised them until about 1/4" and they were free swimming. At this point the female kicked oit the larger male and the smaller male and herself guarded and raised the fry. She then went back to the larger male and spawned again. The smaller male then proceeded to eat most of the fry. He then relentlessly attacked the pair until the new spawn all dissapeared. I have since removed the smaller male, and the pair havent bred since.
Interesting huh?

Ryan I think you better look around for any aquatic mushrooms growing in those tanks.

It was a joke (not a very good one I guess) I was making referace to the mind altering effects of "mushrooms"

LOL. I think it's more likely Viagra. He's literally in the mood all the time. I thought separating him from the female notatus would calm him down, instead he's trying to have a threesome with the Atabapos.
