I got 2 tokay geko's this weekend!!! They are so sweet! I have already learned not to put your hand to close!!! One of them bit me :WHOA: . It didnt hurt, and it was a warning bit, i think!

I have them in a 50 gal tank, with a mesh top. I have a very red bulb on the top of the tank, but it seems to bright. What would you guy recommend for heat buld?

If you have any other hints on raising these guys, please let me know.

Thanks

A bite and release! You were lucky, they prefer to hang on for prolonged periods lol. Beautiful species though.

You can house 2 together, just hope that they're both not males!

Also make sure that they have ample places to get out of each others site every once in a while and you should be fine with 2 in a 50 gallon.

I am lucky enough to have a breeding pair with 2 of thier offspring and they all get along great. I've had them for 5 yrs now and and they're as healthy as can be. Temp wise Tokays are fine from the mid 70s to high 80s (maybe even higher) But the biggest thing you'll need for these guys is humidity. I've used everything from spray bottles to drip systems and I've found that Walmart has these personal misting systems that work the most efficient. Sold as a "person" personal mister that is, so don't expect to see it in the pet aisles. It's a small bottle with a pump at the top and a hose with a small valve on it.....works awesome. A few pumps, open the valve and douse thier enclosure. Do this twice a day and they'll be happy. Lighting is more essential for you than it is these guys as they are pretty much nocturnal and basically don't need it. A larger style type of bark (not too large) is recommended for substrate. If you plan on feeding them crickets be sure to dust them with a good mineral dust as farmed crickets aren't very nutritious. Do this right before you feed them to your Tokays as the crickets won't live a long time after you dust them. You were lucky to get away with a warning bite. I got bit once and I swear the bastard hung on my index finger for 15 min. I actually got my camera out and took pictures of it latched onto my finger. Thankfully it didn't shake it's head a whole lot, that's where some real pain comes into the picture. Good luck and nice pick up!

i heard tokays are one of the larger geckos. does anyone know the max size???

They are the 2d largest gecko but easily the most aggressive...by far.
My male is around 12" and is an absolute brutus. I heard one guy kept one for 20 yrs and it eventually reached 16". Keep in mind that I read this in a book and obviously can't verify the truth on that one. Wouldn't surprise me though. :)

Thanks for all of the help! They seem to be doing fine! I look on the net, on how to sex them, and it seems that i do have a male and female. They have been right next to each other, and on top of each other a lot lately. Is this good or bad?
The that is a male has also been very protective of the female.
Maybe a breeding pair? They came out of the same tank at the store.

I will try to get some pic's with my phone.

I do feed them crickets that are gut loaded and dusted.

Sounds good. I had a breeding pair in a 55 gallon. I gave them to a buddy of mine and he still has them. Put lots of plants in the tank along with plenty of objects to crawl on like branches and vines and make sure they have a place to hide. Spray the tank twice a day to keep up humidity.
