Told my FX5 is no good

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only possible "better" filter is the Ehiem 2262

Fill your fx5 with white widdow! it will run more reality than the mind! Your tank will send you messages from yourself! Your fish know what your thinking ...they reallly know your mind.....

I've read numerous reviews about the FX5 vs Eheim and other canister filters. The FX5 has slightly more foam and slightly less basket capacity for whatever mixture of media you want to use, but all reviews end up with the same result. If you have money to spare buy and Eheim professional series. If you want a good filter w/o spending a fortune buy an FX5. Maybe this guy has something personal against Hagen?? :) I think the FX5 has a little less gph as well. Not like 900gph is bad anyways!

Sorry to burst your bubble some more..

The Fx5 has a flow volume of 600 GPH with or without media. The pump flows 900 GPH OFF the canister and without restrictions.

The Eheim 2262 says 900 GPH but that is the pump without restrictions. Its probably around 600-700 GPH.

Considering when shipping standard ground, it takes 7-10 business days, if it took longer, you would have free shipping :)

I suppose its when they put it in the mail though....

Went across town today to visit the not so LFS. They claim to be the largest in the country and have just moved premises to a new and improved shop. It has been a long wait to see there new setup and although not yet complete, very impressive.
Talkin tanks I mentioned my FX5 on my 200. Only to be met with pure disgust and told that basically I dont have a filter on my tank. The store owner went on to describe that he would never sell one and pulled out diagrams to prove his theory. He was clearly passionate about his cause. I wasn't going to argue the point and basically took it all on board.
I do 40 to 50 percent water changes weekly and he rekons thats the only reason my fish are healthy and that I'm waisting water at a rapid rate.
I've never heard negative feedback on the FX5 and was quite taken a back. I only want to give my fish the best quality water I can and am now unsure about my setup.
Has any one else come across FX5 haters? This guy does have some serious experience under his belt and didn't need to do this. Leaves me wondering:screwy:

I had a woman at a lfs tell me that FX5's were not any good and that they did not have the flow rate that they claim to have. They tried to sell me a Rena Xp4 and she said that it was a better filter. I'm sure your guy did not carry Fluvals either. Maybe he was just pitching his product line.

Hey Dez

I run an Fx5 on a 110 gallon tank. Had it up for over a year and have never had any problems. There are 3 LFS in my city plus a petsmart. I went with the Fx5 because I had run the fluval 305 on my 55 and 75 gallon aquarium for years and always experienced great water quality. I spoke to atleast one individual at each store all of whom i've come to know over the years and not one of them recommended it. Out of the 7 experienced LFS workers 5 did not recommend it however they said it was a nice unit but parts, like the impeller, go out easy, and the other 2 at my favorite LFS said they hated it and would never recommend it for multiple reasons.

don't know how much that helps but that's my experence and i wouldn't swap my Fx5 for anything. actually I just bought a 240 acrylic 8x2x2 new for 275 bucks off craigslist and I plan on using my Fx5 on it.

not sure on the link but i was rolling on the floor with the description that 50 watts is a lot and that it makes for a high operation cost. maybe it's the fact that I run a pond with far larger pumps and wattages.

50w x 24 hours x 31 days is 37kw I pay 3cents a kwh. so a months cost to run the fx5 is $1.11, if you can't afford 1.11$ a month you need a new hobby.

I'd take it from that statement that you don't run a heater then for surely you would go broke with even a 100w heater.
i agree, after a reef tank with a chiller, all the equipment for flow, and 500w of lighting. i think half the people that complain about freshwater operating costs are just rediculous.
its like complaining about the cooking cost of 15cent ramen.

i dont see any design flaw in the fluval that makes it junk, a few areas could be improved, but it seems pretty good.
