Too deep of a substrate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never disturb the substrate except when I smooth out the sand with my hands during water changes. These people are saying it’s a ticking time bomb and everything I’m putting in my aquarium are going to die! What’s really going on? Are my fish safe?

A lot depends on the type of sand. Larger particle sand allows more water 'breathability' and little chance of gas issues than extremely fine grain sand that tends to pack down.

Sand is good substrate for plants and many plant keepers use sand. But fish wastes don't provide balanced nutrients so you must dose what are missing.

Thick sand bed is fine and anaerobic pockets is only problematic if you stir them up. So when you do WC, just vacuum the surface. Plant keepers are very careful not to over disturb the substrate in replanting.
