Too many minnows

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If this is a private pond that they couldn't escape from, you could try adding about 20 needlefish. Their mouths don't really get big enough to mess with your cichlids, plus they stay near the top. That might be the best thing to stop you minnow problem, if you could find enough that were big enough...

Thanks for all the great replys. If anyone is in the area of Vero Beach and wants minnows just let me know and I'll get you a few hundred.

Wow that pond is sweet.

Agreed with the needlefish idea, there are really lots of cool smallish predators that could go in there and thin out the minnow population. Some smallish cats like synodontix maybe, and they'd be compatible with the cichlids...I assume they (the minnows) are breeding?

Welcome to Florida...Gambusia capital of the World (as you know)!

I've got over 150 bream, a few small LMBs and a 18" Pacu in a 20000g pond and I can't keep the mosquito fish down.

Best bet is to live with them (there's a reason their there as there is an abundant food supply for them), they're a good barometer of the ponds health.

I have my concerns about using aros for population control as they develop a taste for certain shiny fish.

get some bullheads. theyre not thought of as fish eaters but they will go crazy on the minnows and leave most of your other fish alone (although a 12'' Bullhead can probably eat a 5'' fish)

I see some pseudos. and other African cichlids. Why not some large predatory AC's. Nimbo's, Fronts, and Comps. will relish some little fishes.

How small are the cichlids that you don't want eaten?
I would throw in a bunch of perch. They love minnows and stay fairly small.
Of course, you will end up with a large perch population!
