And how you know if it was exposed to chemicals before it entered the pet trade?

I don't. As you can note, I was speaking of the probabilities and risks associated with the unknowns. But I'd heed your advice. Houie makes a good point too that crossed my mind.

It's just something to keep in mind, I guess, for every fish keeper.
