Took a gamble on a different looking RTC - thoughts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tend to agree with Rebel.

I wouldn't hold my breath, it's clearly that it isn't a true shortbody RTC. All it has is just a bent tail.

Just enjoying a funny little catfish for now.

I plan to do a very happy little dance; however I'm not holding my breath. The better question is what do I plan to do if he isn't a short body! In that case, I do have a friend from New Orleans who can fry a mean fish.

I think you are joking but if serious, eating fish originating from the ornamental fish trade is a bad idea b/c of the use of meds and other chemicals that are not approved / prohibited for use in raising food grade fishes.

The real question is did OP gave anything to the catfish? If not then the catfish should be fine for human consumption.

Do you suppose it is impossible or highly improbable that the RTC could have been exposed to meds/chemicals in question prior to entering the trade? IDK, hence I ask. I'd imagine it is somewhat probable. They are most likely raised in SE Asia. Or SA?

Appreciate the concern fellows, and thanks TBTB - I wasn't actually aware of that.

In truth I was only half joking. I definitely have a friend who would cook any one of my fish, but I'm not sure I could actually eat a pet.

I mean, remember how much it destroyed Homer when he had to eat Pinchy?

And how you know if it was exposed to chemicals before it entered the pet trade?

Considering the amount of time that would pass and size of the fish when it may have been exposed prior to being in the pet trade compared to the size it would be when butchered I personally wouldn't be particularly concerned about the chemicals if it was then raised on food safe products. Maybe I'm being naive about the potential health risks. I'm not an expert and in no way intend this to be advice, just my gut reaction.

Dude, enjoy your RTC...time will only tell how it grows. Personally, I love special needs fish, seriously. I had a one eyed fish and currently have a gold jack Dempsey with a deformed back and love them because of their oddities. Makes them unique...and clearly you were joking about eating your catfish (way to small still..JK) so I'm sure the chemicals/treatment it may or may not have received is irrelevant to you and a moot point. It's amazing how quickly these threads go off on a tangent.

Its sooooo cute! I would LOVE to one day have a RTC, but first I'd need a massive tank as a juvie so it doesnt stunt, and then a MASSIVE heated indoor pond in my living room.
