get the biggest tank you can afford and have space for. im certainly not recommending to get a smaller tank. but you can have upwards of 20 reds in a 125 with no decor. the thing about piranhas is they do well either way understocked or overstocked. and not so well in between. which is right about the 20 gallon per fish "rule" that everyone is so quick to recommend. 20 gallons/fish is exactly what you want to stay away from. piranhas do not mind being overstocked and im telling you from experience they will be exponentially more outgoing the more you have together. in a 125, for example, the most i would do if you dont want to overstock is 3 adults. maintenace will be easy and they will each have room for a territory. if you put 6 in, which is 20 gal/fish. they are going to fight over territory and one or two of the smallest ones are going to be constantly chased and very stressed. if you toss 4 more in, so you have 10, there will be much less fighting and chasing than there will be with 6. all this applies especially to reds, which are generally the most docile/shy/skittish of all pygos. i would not recommend overstocking anything smaller than a 125 however. good luck

here is a vid from P-Fury of Piranha_Man's 22 pygos in a 150 (same footprint as 125).

I find this very interesting...Im no piranha expert so I dont want to jump to a conclusion but you seem to have some logic behind your theory.

What do others think? Will I be better off (or just as well) with a smaller tank and more maintenance?

Anyone have an opinion on going with a smaller tank to avoid territory aggression?

come on guys! where are the P experts?

i dont want you to misunderstand me. dont go with a smaller tank for any reason. 16 reds in a 125 is not better than 16 reds in a 210 or 240. my point was just that it can be done. you would have to do at least 2 water changes a week and woudnt be able to have any decor though. get the biggest tank you can.

oh...but didnt you say it would curb aggression?

Ill look for the biggest tank I can get...with in reason.

Grats man on the RBs. I am setting my 220 up for 11 right now. 16 lol thats a lot man. To be honest 30-40Gal is the rule of thumb for Rbs(adult of course) I go by 35. I use to keeps Red a long long tim ago. I miss them enough to get a new 220 just for them. My original ones bred so they have the babies waiting for me. I am getting 11 because I don't expect all of them to survive the trip. If they do we will see how things work out. They are very social. You will see some things that will amaze you (at least I did) that only owners get the priviledge........ If they seem to skittish just be patient and give them some time. They will come around as they grow. Good Luck man. All the advice given seems pretty accurate so far. I am a firm believer in 35G when around 9-10 inches though.
