top 3 meanest cichilds

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have read allot on this topic from different sites and I have experience
keeping some of these species and here are the results;
1) Dovi (should be kept by themselves or a single breeding pair, if tank is large enough)
The rest of the fish below can be housed together but only in very large tanks!!!!!!
2) Buterkofrie
3) Umbie
4) Festae
5) Haitiensis
6) Jaguar
7) red devils and the rest............

I strongly believe this to be correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rams, checkerboards, and curviceps hands down. I don't advised adding rams if you value your other fish though, even at 1" they'll hunt down your RD and off it.

Mixing new and old worlds can work but often doesn't. Water parameters have very little to with it as most old world cichlids are farm raised and have evolved to no longer need the ph levels required of their wild relatives. In my experience it has more to do with language. What I mean by that is they speak a different "fish" language. When new world cichlids have conflict they have a way of determining dominance. Once that is established it can, depending on tank size be the end of the problem. When an old world cichlid is in a conflict with a new world, often the communication between the fish is misread and leads to greater conflict down the road. In addition, some old worlds are very quick and the new worlds end up with tattered fins. In my 240 I have a Buttikoferri that does great with new worlds. So who knows if it will work. I have had a 4 inch bumblee shred a 14 inch flowerhorn. Water parameters should not be an issue so long as you have good water quality and a constant PH.

This is theoretically true. Many of the CA cichlids can tolerate the same pH and water conditions that the africans live in. However, african cichlids wont thrive in water conditions that most south and CA are found in. As far as the compatibility issues due to different ''language''. This could be an issue if both tankmates were of similiar size and demeanor. I suggested two small cave dwellers that I have had experience with mixing both new and old world. The neet (neetroplus nematopus) is from the same waters as the red devil. Those waters can be very alkaline, as well. Another african that would probably work with your red devil is the lamprolongus leulupi.

Keeping cichlids is often trial and error. There are no absolutes. Don't let anyone discourage you from mixing new and old World cichlids. I have heard that by all the purist at the lfs, who were told that by some other ''expert''. Keep the fish that you are most interested in and you will be happier in the long run. That being said, from my own experience, I think the neet, leulupi, and the tetracanthus would be compatible. More so than a festae, jag, or butt.

For the record neets that arn't paired up dont create any issues; im yet to see my neets stand up to an equal sized sa/ca cichlid.

Im guessing all the wrap neets have gotten is when they're breeding..

imo 1. DOVII ( OF COURSE!) 2. GT (mine is a monster) 3. Yellow Labs (there small but mine 3.5" whipped a 6-7" oscar almost to death but he stopped finnaly) thats my opinion

Yellow labs? that's a first, but regardless it's not a SA/CA cichlid.
