Top dweller compatible with my SA cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most Archerfish do best in brackish, so i would go Festivum. Plus the Archerfish are Asian, which to me seems weird to mix with SA fish for some reason.... :nilly:

^yeah, but aren't Burmese Archer fish (Toxotes blythi) freshwater? and it's hard to beat them @the top, if biotape doesn't matter to the owner. I wanted to get them but it's pricey to get a group- which is best. but mainly, aquascapeonline only guarantees DOAs within certain water parameters...odd, since fish are either doa or they're not.

From what I can gather, there are four pure freshwater species of archerfish (I think they are all Australian). There is a fifth that is commonly sold in pet stores as just an archerfish that is mostly freshwater, but can be found in slightly brackish waters. That fifth species is reportedly able to live its life in a pure freshwater habitat. There are only two species that are brackish and require it to survive. Or at least that is what I have read.

As for bio types, I don't mind mixing them. So long as all my fish get along without killing one another, I am happy with that. I do keep SA cichlids almost exclusively, but that is just because I have been drawn to them more than any other fish.

I think you are right, but I thought that the commonly sold ones are brackish? They had some pure freshwater Archers at a LFS (I think they were Burmese) and they wanted $100 each.

According to the article, the T. microlepis species is a commonly carried archerfish that many pet stores label as a common archer that is brackish, but it in fact is found in freshwater and the most brackish it gets is slightly brackish (don't ask me to quantify that as I have no idea what slightly brackish is in specific gravity LOL). I have been looking for a picture that shows the difference in pattern between the different species. So far I haven't had luck, but if I find it, I will post it. If I can find one, I can use it to identify the mislabeled archers in the local Petcos (only place I have seen that carry any toe of archers) and make out like a bandit since they only charge $8-12 for brackish archers. :)

Asellus Puffer is also an option.. Lots of personality, cool patterns and friendly. They are a little hard to come by though

The asellus are proving difficult to find. Will look to keep a group of 4-5 if I can find them.

Archerfish are out. It took me three days to find a freshwater archer source, but they want $120 each! Way out of my price range. So I will be getting the festivum unless I can find some puffers within the next two weeks.
