Howdy,

Many of you guys mention that you grow out monsters and then trade them in for store credit at your LFS. Others just trade for variety.

Here's my problem: I could not find a single store in the greater Kansas City area that accepts trade-ins for compensation. Basically, I am lucky if they take my fish at all. No one wants to give me $ or store credit or other fish in return. Not even my LSF where I got them from. But: I paid hard $ for them, they'll sell them for hard $, and damn it, I think I should see at least some of it.

  1. How do you go about getting store credit?
  2. Do you know such a store in the KC area?

Oh yeah, it's about my Red Hooks. As I have stated before, they cause nothing but trouble. I also said I enjoy having them, but no more. Beautiful fish, but too skittish and destructive. Honestly, I do not think they are suitable for captivity, or mine are just :screwy: Anyways, I give them another couple of weeks, but I am seriously considering getting rid of them. In my tank, they bang into the glass full force, every time leaving a cloud of scales behind. Despite of floating cork bark, water lettuce (which they ate completely), branched driftwood, they freak out every single time I come near the tank, even when I feed.:swear:

I have been a proponent of "you buy a fish, you accept responsibility". But these guys are starting to spoil the fun of fishkeeping. I enjoy my tank less and less every time they slam into the walls and hurt themselves :shakehead

I know how you feel about the credit. My lfs is the same way. They act like they are doing you a big favor and going out of their way by taking a fish off your hands and then turn around and sell it for $30.

I to have had to deal with this, But the thing is, Most LFSs wont give $$$$$ or store credit for Big fish because of what itll cost them to feed them. Plus theres no way to be sure that someone will buy a Monster size fish. Its rare for many fish keepers to even have the ability let alone the space to house monster fish.

The Two LFSs I mainly deal with will offer to hold the fish an if its sold in less than a month, theyll charge 50 cents to 1.00 a day an subtract that from what the fish sold for an give you the difference.

stray electric current??? your tank groounded?

My LFS told me they would give me $5 for my adult angels.... I asked what he would give me for my nice breeding pair of golds and he goes....$10 total because we are not going to sell them together... Oh and they would turn around and sell them for $25 each. Hum...let me see. I have 8 large angels and I would get $40 from them while they would get $200 and they didn't even have to pay for high quality food...They can go sholve their head up something else...I feel for you man.

Could you possibly expand on your post? How do you ground your tank? I have my group of silver dollars that I'm afraid are going to dash themselves to death as well. I already lost two bala sharks that got spooked by the silver dollars sudden darting movements they crashed into the glass top. Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread, but I have the same problem

No local stores around here will give cash for adult fish,If you give them the fish theyll sell them,if you catch them in a good mood.
I got 2 of them to reluctantly agree to give me wholesale price store credit for offspring of my f1 tank bred mbuna juvies, when what they usually sell is farmed hybrids that look like theyre dying of parasites

Howdy,

And thanks for all of your input. Let me go thru some replies:

theres gotta be a reason for them being skittish, mine almsot never spaz out.

What's your tank set-up? As stated above, I provide plenty of hiding spots, partly covered surface, and I house them with swordtails, butterfly fish and gouramis. All quiet, peaceful fish. My water is slightly acidic (pH 6.6). I tried low current (Eheim Pro 3 only) and high current (40 W power head). High aeration, regular aeration. Massive weekly water changes, reduced water changes. Doesn't change a thing... Only thing I haven't tried is peat filtration, and I am not planning on it, either.

what do you have that you want to sell i live close to KC and am always interested in new fish....
6 x Myleus rubripinnis luna 6'' (see avatar). I'll try grounding my tank and give them another week or so. If they still knock my heaters out of their clamps (like they did once again this morning during feeding:swear: ) they're free to a good home. I would want $ from an LFS who turns around and sell them. If a fellow MFKer can give them a good home, they're free. I'll shoot you a PM in a week if they haven't calmed down after grounding.

Thanks guys
What a great forum.
